LUBBOCK-Robert E. Avery, Jr., 93, of Lubbock, went to be with the Lord February 6, 2013. His life will be honored at George Price Funeral Home in Levelland at 3:30 p.m. Monday, February 11, 2013, with burial to follow in City of Levelland Cemetery. The family will receive guest and friends from 2-4 pm on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at George Price Funeral Home.
He was born February 18, 1919 on a farm just outside of Duke, Oklahoma. He moved to Whitharral, TX when he was 11 years old and started barbering when he was 14. He was so small, he had to let the chair all the way down and stand on a coke case to reach the customer. After graduation from Whitharral high school, he got his barber license.
He was drafted into the Army in 1942 and served in the Fourth Infantry in Alaska for two years. He then served in the South Pacific with the occupation troops.
He married Mildred Clark September 9, 1947. They were devoted to each other for 65 years. She loved him and was with him until the very end. They had two children. Rex preceded him in death. Rita Smith, of Lubbock, earned her angel wings for her love and care of her beloved Daddy. After the death of his sister, they raised two of her children, Steve and Johnny Graham.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred of Lubbock; daughter Rita Smith and her husband Drew of Lubbock; four grandchildren: Angela Ward and husband Kevin of San Angelo; Jenni Burns and husband Jim of Lubbock; Lance Modawell and wife Crystal of San Antonio; and Heather Ward and husband Scott of San Angelo. He was also blessed with eight great-grandchildren: Mikalie, Blake, Hannah, Gavin, Brooks, Weston, Luke and Emily also three brothers; Don Avery of Whitharral, Dewayne Avery of Petersburg and Glen Avery of Electra.
He retired from farming in 1979 and moved to Possum Kingdom Lake. When he got too old to fish, they moved to Lubbock. He died of natural causes.
