Funeral services for Barty Johnson, 91, of Levelland are 10:00 am Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at George Price Funeral Home with Elder Gayle McCoy officiating. Burial will follow in the City of Levelland Cemetery under direction of George Price Funeral Home. He died at his home on Saturday, June 5, 2010 under the care of Interim Hospice. The family will receive visitors from 6 – 8 pm Monday, June 7, 2010 at the funeral home.
Barty was born to Jesse and Annie (McGowan) Johnson on May 30, 1919 in Blanchard, OK. He married Peggy Sikes on December 3, 1947 and they shared fifty-nine years together until her death in 2006. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army serving in WWII. He owned and operated Levelland Body Shop for 53 years as well as serving as a volunteer fireman. One of his passions was coaching Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball. In May 2010, the old Babe Ruth Ballpark in Levelland was renamed Barty Johnson Field in tribute to him.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Odell James. He is survived by two sons, Mike (Hoot) Johnson and wife Brenda of Lubbock and Larry (Scooter) Johnson and wife, Karen of Levelland; three sisters, Ama Lee Pinkert of Irving, TX, Bay Fienberg of Lubbock, and Joyce Peters of Whiteface, TX; a brother, Elvin Johnson of Whiteface; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
