April 12, 2022, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital. Fred was born in Caldwell County on November 6, 1935,
to the late Lee and Maudie White McGee.
Fred was most known for his kindness and generosity. He would do anything for anyone, and never
asked for anything in return. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, spending time with his family, playing
cards, and most of all learning and reading all he could about Jesus.
In addition to his parents, Mr. McGee was preceded in death by his brothers, Tipton, Finley, Ralph, and
Lawrence; sisters, Edna, Mae, Irene, and Shirley. Fred was the last of the McGee siblings to leave this
earth. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, and mother of his children, Shirley Sams McGee,
and his second wife, Hazel Brookshire McGee. Lastly, Fred was preceded in death by his long-time best
friend, and business partner of 57 years, Floyd Honeycutt. The pair owned a grading business named
McGee & Honeycutt. When they weren’t playing in the dirt, you could find them at their garage playing
cards, at the high stakes of a penny.
Fred is survived by his daughters Pam Mayberry and husband Mark, Sissy Kincaid and husband Bryon,
Freda McGee and husband Wess; grandchildren Erin Ford and husband Blake, Stephen Smith and wife
Brittney, Alexis McGee and husband Kevin, and Brennan Mayberry; great-grandchildren Easton and
Hunter Smith, and Gracelyn and William ‘Flynn’ Ford.
The family would like to thank Fred’s two caregivers Elma Haynes and Wilma Happney (also known,
jokingly, as Erma and Wilbur). Elma and Wilma spent the last 9 months caring for Fred and bringing joy
to his life.
A celebration of Fred’s life will be held at Union Baptist Church (4595 Union Baptist Rd, Lenoir, NC) on
Saturday, April 16, 2022, at 2:30 p.m. Burial will immediately follow the service at Union Baptist Church
Cemetery. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:30, at the church.
