Mrs. Jones was born in Caldwell County to the late John Henry Dixon and Alma Corpening and was raised at the Central Orphanage in Oxford, NC. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Tonya Michelle Corpening, a brother-in-law, David R. Jones, a sister-in-law, Ossie E. Thomas and an aunt, Glennie Helton. She was a school teacher for Valmead Elementary School for 30 years and a total of 40 years in the school system. She was a member of the First Church of God in Lenoir where she served as a Pastor’s aid, on the usher board and helped in many areas of the church and was a secretary for the NAACP.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Donald Roe Jones of the home; her son, Reginald Jones of Lenoir; her daughter, Tonnette Banner Cheatam of Orlando, FL; a sister, Brenda Corpening Poteat of Spencer, NC; two grandchildren, Tekia Bass of Durham and Bryson Harshaw of Morganton; a great grandchild, Coy Bass of Durham; a sister-in-Law, Lola Mae Jones; nieces, Matoka Horton of Clarksville, TN, Nella Perez of Lenoir, Delores Wilson of Augusta, GA and Tonya M. Jones of Salisbury; nephews, Maurice Jones and Douglas Jones, both of Lenoir; great niece, Jameka Horton of Clarksville, TN and a host of other great-nieces and great-nephews.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Church of God in Lenoir with Pastor Jerome Pearson officiating. Burial will follow at the Corpening Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends and loved ones prior to the service at the church at 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.
Serving as pallbearers will be Douglas Jones, Maurice Jones, Pedro Perez, Jacolby Stanley, Adam Steptoe, Jr, and Lee Sigmon.
The family requests that memorials be made to Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood Street, Lenoir, NC 28645.
