Mrs. Lois Mae Sides Morgan, 96, of Morganton, NC departed this life on the earth and entered into the eternal presence of Glory and her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at Burke County Hospice and Palliative Care in Valdese.
Mrs. Morgan was born May 30, 1915. She was the daughter of the late Elizabeth (Lizzie) Sides and the late Robert O. Sides. Blind since the age of 18 due to an automobile accident in which a careless young man only wanted to scare two teenage girls who were walking home from church. Mrs. Morgan was employed by the Charlotte Workshop for the Blind where she met her husband, the late James A. Morgan. They married on May 15, 1942. Mrs. Morgan and her husband owned and operated Morgan’s Grocery in the Hartland Community for many years. She was also employed by West Lenoir Cushion. Mrs. Morgan was also a member of the Caldwell Insight Group and she previously attended Antioch Baptist Church and was a current member of Hartland Baptist Church.
At the age of 90, Mrs. Morgan took her very first airplane trip. She went to Myrtle Beach with her sister and her niece. Mrs. Morgan was presented with her own set of gold wings from the airline and a plaque to commemorate her trip. Lois Morgan was devoted to her family, her church and her friends. She truly enjoyed music and loved to dance.
Mrs. Morgan was preceded in death by her husband; four brothers, Robert M. Sides, Carl O. Sides, Clyde Sides and C. Bennett Sides; two sisters, Pearl Hallyburton and Mabel Putnum and a very close friend, Earlene Simpson.
Those left to cherish her memory are her son, James Steven “Steve” Morgan and wife Judy of Morganton; two grandchildren, Doug Morgan of Lenoir and Lisa Morgan of Morganton; a sister, Gladys Burns of Wingate; three great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren and a very special friend, Ivey Simpson.
A funeral service for Mrs. Morgan will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 27, 2011 at Hartland Baptist Church in Lenoir, NC with Reverend Steve Parker, Reverend Brian Smith, Reverend George Williams and Reverend Matthew A. Grindstaff. Interment will follow at Burke Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the church.
Serving as pallbearers will be Conway Powell, Russ Kraus, Joey Burns, Gary Burns, Rodney Causby, Tom Shuping, Chris Gagnon and Wade Griffin.
