Clara Barnwell Smith, age 92, of Lenoir, passed away on April 30, 2011. Clara was born on June 17, 1918 in Henderson County, NC to John Frank and Princess McAbee Barnwell.
Clara was preceded in death by her parents and by her husband, Hazel W. Smith; by seven sisters: Catherine Barnwell, Edith Barnwell, Mrs. Charles (Ethel) Brooks, Mrs. Vernon (Elizabeth) Cannon, Mrs. Frank (Ada) Winterling, Mrs. William (Viola) McAbee and Mrs. John (Lenne) Morrison and by four brothers: Clyde Barnwell, Theodore Barnwell, John Barnwell and Luther Barnwell.
To cherish her memory is her daughter, Janice Smith Coonse and husband, Alan Coonse of Lenoir; grandchildren Jeffrey Coonse and wife, Liza, of Raleigh; Brandon Coonse and wife, Shalini of New York City; and her great-grandchildren Schuyler Coonse and Dylan Coonse of Raleigh. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
Clara was a faithful member of North Catawba Baptist Church where she enjoyed serving her Lord.
She also liked sharing her home with family and friends. She was an avid reader, loved to crochet and enjoyed baking pound cakes.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at North Catawba Baptist Church with Rev. Ned Webb, Rev. John Barnhardt and Rev. Robert Livingston officiating in the service. Burial will follow at the North Catawba Baptist Church cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Bob King, Eric South, Howard Rogers, Kennith Craig, Alan Johnson, Lee Franklin and Chris LeFevers.
The family will receive friends at Pendry's Funeral Home in Lenoir on Monday evening, May 2, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
The family requests that donations to cherish her memory may be made to the American Lung Association, the American Heart Association or the Gideon Ministry.
She will be missed by many. She has been a blessing in the lives of those who knew her. She will be remembered for being a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Her simplicity and loving nature has left a lasting impression in each of our hearts.
