passed away on October 24, 2012. He was born on May 3, 1915 in Morganton, NC. He was predeceased by his parents, Bessie Avery Johnston and Luther Clay Johnston, his three brothers, Avery, Fred and Erwin, his two sisters, Katy and Iris, his grandson Kenneth Johnston and his beloved wife, Marjorie.
He is survived by his son, Bruce Johnston, Jr. and wife Barbara, his two daughters, Vicki J. Havens and husband, Nelson, Peggy J. Evans and husband, Bob, his grandsons Keith Johnston and family, Jeffery Evans and family, Christopher Evans and family, Michael Havens and family and his granddaughter, Jean Havens.
Bruce attended Lenoir High School where he met and later married his sweetheart, Marjorie Hoskins in 1935. He worked at Lenoir Pad and Paper Company as secretary/treasurer and general manager for nine years. He left Lenoir to represent Southern Desk Company in the Roanoke area. In 1972 he and Marjorie returned to Lenoir. He, his brother, Erwin and Sterling Brown started Sterling Bruce, Inc. The business was sold in 1989.
Bruce and Marjorie enjoyed retirement with family and trips to their Holden Beach cottage. Bruce moved back to Roanoke in 2011 to be close to his two daughters and their families.
Private graveside services were held in Lenoir at Blue Ridge Memorial Cemetery.
Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for the Bruce Johnston family.
