On December 1, 2023, Annie Edna Phillips Nichols passed peacefully after an extended battle with several chronic illnesses. Annie was born on September 11, 1941 in Ashe County. She passed in the way that she loved to be in life–surrounded by her family. During her life, Annie enjoyed watching game shows and soap operas, shopping, and spending time with her friends and family. Annie was happiest when she was sitting at her kitchen table, drinking her coffee, and visiting with any of the hundreds of individuals who walked through her door over the course of her lifetime.
Annie is survived by: her brother, Jerry Phillips; four of her children, Renee Dula (Darryl) of Lenoir, Daniel Nichols (Dakota) of Morganton, Tabitha Hendrix (Matthew) of Hudson, and Tiffany de Guzman of Los Angeles; and six grandchildren, Ann, Amanda, Kristine, Korbin, Asher, and Zaida. A “Momma” and “Mamaw” to anyone who needed one, Annie is also survived by many others who loved her as a mother, grandmother, or great-grandmother, by blood or otherwise. Annie was preceded in death by two of her children, Rex and Teresa, and by her dear and beloved husband of 49 years, Carl.
Everyone who knew and loved Annie knew that she was the best of us. Her love was tough, but it was unconditional and never ending. Annie was brilliant, strong, hardworking, and above all else, wholly unselfish. She gave and gave, and sacrificed everything so that her children could live easier lives than she did. She did everything she could to leave the world in a better shape than she found it in, and she taught her kids to do the same. Annie was truly one-of-a-kind, and she will be missed beyond measure.
A receiving of friends honoring Annie’s life will be held at Pendry’s Funeral Home on December 7, 2023 from 6:00-8:00 pm. The funeral will be held at Pendry’s on December 8, 2023 at 11:00 am, with burial in Greene Family Cemetery in Watauga County.
