Byron David Frankenberger passed away at home in Lakeside, CA surrounded by family on Aug. 23, 2013, at the age of 82. He was born on Sept. 11, 1930 in Kansas City, MO to parents Byron and Alline Frankenberger. He moved with his family to San Diego in 1940 where he attended Sweetwater H.S.
Byron is lovingly remembered by his wife and companion Cindy of 20 years whose unwavering commitment and gentle care were essential in the final years of his life. He is also dearly remembered by his children: Byron Raymond (Nancy), Rodney (Leslie), Craig, Cindy Lou, Eric (Holly), Aaron (Silvia) and step-children Josh and Jamie and his beloved sister Diane. Byron was blessed with 19 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Tommie Lou, his second wife Beverly Joan and his granddaughter Sandra Dee.
Byron was an innovative man whose contributions in the field of telemetry served as building blocks for today’s systems. He began his career in his father’s radio and T.V. shop at a very young age. Byron worked as an engineer at Cubic Corp. before founding Conic Corp. in 1961 with his father, Hugh Bennett, Robert O’Dell, Charles Griffin and Everett Shilts. With only $5000, they were able to build a multimillion-dollar corporation with their expertise and ground-breaking ideas. Conic’s miniature telemetry transmitters sent back data from missiles and satellites in flight for NASA and the U.S. Military. Conic’s transmitters brought us the first images of the Apollo mission on the moon. Byron served as the Vice President and Engineering Director of Conic Corp. up until his retirement. His infectious laugh and sparkling blue eyes will never be forgotten. Byron was a humble, gracious and brilliant man who will be dearly missed.
A celebration of Byron’s life will be held on September 7th at Byron and Cindy’s residence. For more information about the celebration please call (858)-277-1236.
