Nellie Pearl Tanner Hogan, age 93, of Birmingham, Alabama went to her eternal home to be with her Lord and Savior surrounded by her family at home on Sunday, August 20, 2023. She is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Pearl Garner; two sons, Elvie William Tanner and John Randall “Randy” Tanner; and grandson, Noah Blake Howard. She spent her life as a homemaker, an aide at Rose Manor Nursing Home, and finally retired as an Assistant to the Child Nutrition Program at Curry Elementary School in May of 1992. Nellie was the heart of her family and lit up every room she walked into with a smile and a laugh. She loved hosting large family holidays and gatherings, working outside in her yard, and always had a seat on her front porch swing and a cup of coffee if you needed it. She had a listening ear for anyone who wanted to talk and was full of wisdom, and she’d always remind you to keep going when things got tough. Her grandchildren spent many days and nights at “MawMaw’s” house, riding bikes in the yard, watching her TV “stories,” sneaking cups of coffee at sleepovers, and having potato chip breakfasts. When you walked out of her front gate, she always watched as your car drove off, waving and saying she’d “See you in the funny papers- on the front page!”
Nellie is survived by her daughters, Sharon Stauffer (Paul Fowler), Lynn Campbell (Randall Smith), Genia Cobb, Becky Hatfield (David), and Tammy Howard (Johnny); 14 grandchildren, Treva Tanner Reeves (David), Robby Tanner, Katrina Tanner Hammond (Jason), Savannah Deanne Fowler, Cary Campbell, Lindsey Cobb Faucher (Philip), Kristin Cobb Lindsey (Cayce), Nichole Hamilton Oniszko (Scott), Stephanie Hamilton Nelson (Chris), Caleb Hamilton, Johnathon Howard (Lynsey), Starr Howard Graham (Garret), Summer Howard Davis (Jake) and 21 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 23, 2023 at Kilgroe Funeral Home from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm. Funeral services will be held on August 23, 2023 at Kilgroe Funeral Home beginning at 12:00pm with interment to be held at Forest Crest Cemetery.
“Mother”
It is a wonderful thing,
A Mother;
Other folks can love you,
But only your mother understands.
She works for you, looks after you, loves you.
Forgives you anything you may do, understands you,
And the only bad thing She ever does to you is to
Die and leave you.
