James Winston Jarvis passed away on December 3, 2019 at 91 years of age. He is predeceased by his parents Charles Winston Jarvis and Ludie Price Jarvis Davis, stepfather Marvin Davis, sister Betty Sue Jarvis, and many beloved family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 52 years Doris Lynn Gimberg Jarvis, daughter Wendy Jarvis (Michael Glaser), brother Charles Edward Jarvis (Peggy Jarvis), caregiver and buddy Tammy Miller, many dear in-laws, nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Known to some as Jim or JW and to many as Uncle Red, he was born in Union County, MS on September 18, 1928. As a child he moved often throughout the south with his family. He lived for many years near Anniston, AL and settled in Leeds, AL in 1967.
Jim served in the U.S. Army, was a Master Mason and Shriner, and member of the Eastlake, AL and Leeds, AL Lodges. He was also a member of Leeds Presbyterian Church. He worked as an aircraft planner with Hayes/Pemco Aircraft for 38 years. In retirement he stayed busy as a fixit man for all and sundry, was the #1 breakfast gravy chef for the Leeds Lodge, and rarely missed an exercise class at the Leeds Senior Center.
Some of Uncle Red’s favorite times were summer weekends spent on Logan Martin Lake with old friends and family frying enough fish on a Coleman stove to feed the neighborhood. There should be a YouTube channel about his frying technique, and a collection of his tall tales and southernisms (did you know that calf slobber is another name for whipped cream?).
As he so very often said, “Everything’s gonna be alright.” He will be deeply missed and well-remembered.
