Bob was born on April 15, 1928 in Montgomery, Alabama and was the third child of John Dixon and Ethel Covington. Upon completing high school at Sidney Lanier, he served his country in the United States Navy from 1945-1947. Returning to Alabama, he graduated from the University of Alabama completing both a B.S. and M.S. in Education. The university awarded him the Algernon Sidney Sullivan Medallion for both his strong character and academic performance.
While at the University Baptist Student Union he met his first wife of 52 years, Gerry.
Upon completing university, Bob pursued his calling into pastoral and missions work and received a Doctorate in Theology from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.
Bob then pastored churches in Louisiana and Mississippi until he and Gerry answered the call to international missions in Singapore, Malaysia and Australia. His love of teaching led him to be a professor at seminaries in each of these locations and he was Dean of the Singapore Baptist Theological Seminary. After returning to the United States upon his retirement he served as interim pastor of numerous churches in Alabama.
After the passing of Gerry, Bob was blessed to join in marriage to Ann (Poe) Covington. His life of service continued with his commitment to the Lions Club and as a member of the First Baptist Church of Cedar Bluff.
Family was extraordinarily important to Bob and he worked hard to ensure that despite the distant ministry locations, his family knew that he loved and respected them. Bob was father to four children, Dan and John (Debbie) Covington, Timothy Poe and Jennifer (Terry) Jones.
Bob was grandfather to four, Robert and Rebekah Covington, Matt Jones, and Rachael Jones Flynn (Chris).
An avid sports fan, Bob loved to cheer on the Crimson Tide and the Atlanta Braves at every possible opportunity.
Bob was well-known for demonstrating Christ-like kindness and love to others. His memory will be a blessing for all that knew him.
