John P. “Johnnie” Schauer III, 88, of Linglestown, formerly Lebanon, passed away on Sunday March 30, 2025 at Kindred Place. He was the loving husband of Joy S. Heim Schauer with whom he celebrated 65 years of marriage last October 4th. John was born in Lebanon on December 16, 1936, son of the late John P., Jr. and Sarah I. Holland Schauer. He was a proud Lebanon High School graduate with the class of 1954. His pride in Lebanon High was on display throughout this life as he regularly told everyone that his class ring never came off of his finger. He often remarked that he would give up his wedding ring before his class ring. He served in the U.S. Navy as a dental assistant and returned to Lebanon where he worked for 25 years at Peiffer’s Foodland before going to Rohland Funeral Home where he worked for another 25 years prior to his retirement. He liked to say he went from fresh produce to frozen goods. He was known for his sense of humor. There were times he held up to 4 jobs to support his family and he only ever missed 3 days of work throughout his working career. John was a member of the former St. Paul’s EUB church and later the Covenant UM Church. He had a devout faith in God and loved singing all of the old hymns. He supported the military after retirement by volunteering at the Lebanon VA Medical Center, accruing over 1500 hours. He was a long-time member of both the Liberty and Independent Fire Company social clubs. He was an avid sports fan. He was a PIAA softball umpire for many years and enjoyed talking about the many years he umpired for the former City-County Men’s Fast Pitch Softball League. He was a lifelong fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and St. Louis Cardinals baseball team and spoke about Stan “the Man” Musial every chance he could. He supported every Lebanon High sports team and his loyalty was recognized upon being inducted in to the Lebanon High Athletic Hall of Fame with the Cedar Spirit Award. He called it his proudest accomplishment. He loved to play cards, especially 4-handed pinochle with his wife, daughter and grandson. In retirement, he could be found visiting Hollywood Casino with his wife and taking bus trips to Atlantic City. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He will always be remembered for his loyalty to God and family, his pride in his home town, his state and his country as well as his sense of humor and love of sports. In addition to his wife he is survived by his grandson: Jordan Carey and his wife MegAnn and their son Ezra of New Cumberland; great-granddaughter; Mackenzie Schauer Carey of Mechanicsburg and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter: Lori Carey; grandson: Jason Schauer Carey; brother: Ken and sisters: Kathleen and Peggy. Funeral services will be Saturday April 5, 2025 at 11:00 am. at Covenant UM Church 346 N. 9th St., Lebanon, PA 17046 where a viewing will be held from 10:00 am until the time of service. Interment will be in the National Cemetery at Ft. Indiantown Gap. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to the Lebanon High School Athletic Boosters, 1000 S. 8th St., Lebanon, PA 17042.
