She was born in Houston, Texas in November of 1967 to Delores Alexander and Charles Dunbar Sr. Yolanda joined the United States Army, stationed in Huntsville, Alabama. During her military career she was stationed in various places including Germany and Turkey. After receiving an Honorable discharge from the military, Yolanda received her bachelor's degree from Austin P. University in Clarksville, Tennessee. Her travels with the military sparked a love of travel that she would carry throughout her life. Yolanda, her husband Jerry, and son Zach have traveled to many countries including Egypt, Turkey, Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Spain, London, Switzerland, Canada, Mexico and Portugal to name a few! Yolanda worked as a financial analyst for the Texas Department of Insurance in Austin, Texas where she retired in 2019.
Yolanda was preceded in death by her beloved grandmother, Maxine Matthews and brother Charles Dunbar Jr. and a host of uncles and an aunt (Ivory Woodson). She is survived by her husband Jerry Kirkland, son Zachary Kirkland (Alina Kirkland), mother Delores Alexander (Jesse Alexander), Father Charles Dunbar Sr., sister Keshia Dunbar-Sample (Kenneth Sample), stepmother Ernestine Green (Jesse Green) of Ogden, Utah and a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins from Houston, Tx and Beaufort, SC.
Yolanda was a wonderful wife, mother, daughter, and sister. She has left us with so many cherished memories and lessons that we will carry dear in our hearts from this day forward. She was so intelligent and classy. We all loved her tenacity and her spark. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Her favorite saying when times got rough was “And this too shall pass”. We will remember these words to help us get through this tough time.
