It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Pete Murphy, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Pete departed this world suddenly on September 10, 2023, surrounded by his family at the age of 73, in Leander, Texas.
Born on March 16, 1950, the youngest of the family, in Long Island, NY, he had a special relationship with his oldest sister Irene Fusco and her husband Robert (Bob). He enlisted in the Air Force and served in Thailand during the Vietnam War as a jet engine mechanic. The Air Force moved him to Altus, OK and he took college courses through USAO and began his 50-year career in Title Insurance in 1972 as an abstractor.
Pete married Kristen (Resneder) Doran and they had one son, Derry in 1973 before that marriage ended and he moved to Texas in 1985 where he lived the rest of his life. On New Years Eve of 1985, Pete met Teri, falling instantly for her, and they were wed in 1986.
Pete continued to take care of his now blended family and rise in his career where he was respected for his knowledge and mentorship, becoming a Chief Title Officer and manager, and always helping others to grow in their role and career. He spent most of a decade at Barrett, Burke, Wilson, Daffin, Castle & Frappier, LLC and ended with almost 20 years at Sierra Title. His career and family took him from DFW to McAllen and finally to the Austin area where he retired in 2022.
Pete is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Theresa (Teri), his sons Derry and spouse Rona, Kelly Bright and spouse JoAnn, and daughter Carroll (Bright) Hyndman and spouse Patrick. His grandchildren Brea Baker, Dakota Murphy, McKenzie (Mac) Baker and spouse Bethany, Raenie Murphy, Chelsea Chambers, Raylan Murphy, Keylee Murphy, Olivia (Bright) Kline and spouse Jacob, and Elizabeth Hyndman. He also is survived by his great-grandsons Jase Murphy and Barett (Bo) Foxx.
He leaves us to join his sister Irene and her husband Bob, his brother George and other siblings, and his grandson Daron Murphy along with many family and friends who have already departed.
Pete will be remembered for his devotion to his family and friends and his willingness to do anything for someone in need. Be it help, advice or just needing a friend you can count on like family, he was there and ready. His great joy in life was the Christmas season as it matched his personality in so many ways – warm, inviting, generous and fun. He delighted in dressing as Santa and donating his time to neighbors and groups so that children could have a little extra Christmas magic and his children and grandchildren enjoyed being his elves.
We will be celebrating the life of Peter Murphy on Saturday, October 21st, 2023, at Weed Corley Fish Funeral Homes, 1200 S. Bagdad, Leander, TX 78641 from 11-2, with the memorial service being from 11-12 and reception immediately following on site. There will be no gravesite services at this time, the family will have a private interment at a later date. There will be a casual open house at the Murphy residence following for anyone who wishes to visit with the family.
