He was born to the late Edmund and Adele Nance, 1940, in Dallas, Texas. Mike graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1958 and attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. He married Suzanne Park, 1960. He remarried Connie Stark, 1996. He retired celebrating a 33 year sales career with Southwestern Bell Yellow Pages.
Mike is survived by five children: Mickey Nance, of Elgin; Tamye Johnson, of Kingwood; Robin De La Paz, of Celina, Colby Gilmour, of Austin and Kyle Gilmour, of Austin. He had six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mike was a simple man with simple passions. He had a lifelong love affair with sports. He was a fixture at his son’s basketball games and was a fan through thick and thin of the Cowboys, Rangers and Mavericks. The Red Raiders were always close to his heart. He especially liked to watch and play golf.
Mike took pride in his sales skills, but he was ahead of his time. He didn’t live to work, he worked to live. He took care of his family and became a real home body. Working in the yard was more than a hobby. He always had the nicest lawn in the neighborhood. And he loved to drive. He had more cars than he could remember and didn’t think twice about a 200 mile commute. He knew the roads of Texas like the back of his hand. He also drove on our big vacations to Florida, Colorado and the Texas coast. He passed on that independence to his kids by buying first cars for all of them.
Holidays were special. Always the family gatherings at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Loved his Greenberg turkeys and going over the top on gifts. Like his father, he could wrap a perfect present. There are countless pictures of him sitting in the middle of the room, dog in his lap, just enjoying watching everyone open presents.
There were also the little things that made him happy. Cigarettes, his dogs, BBQ and anything sweet. A big screen TV was a must, and he always had his favorite chair. He knew how to relax, whether it was a long bath or just sitting outside listening to the birds. And he was a consummate organizer, which he passed on to his kids.
Mike really found happiness when he married Connie. It may have come later in life, but they were meant for each other. It translated into his other relationships, as well. He adapted to all his kids, being what they needed. He was always there if you needed him and would give you his last dollar if you needed it. All the phone calls ended, “talk at ya later.”
He lived a full life and passed with the dignity that was most important to him.
A memorial service for Mike will be held Saturday, June 1, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Homes, 1200 S. Bagdad, Leander, TX 78641.
