Doug was born on April 8, 1963, to George and Bette Keith. Doctors advised them to institutionalize Doug because they believed that his care would be too much for George and Bette. They knew better and took Doug home to join his older sisters, Betteanne, Marilee and Bonnie. Soon, the family grew again when Sheri was born, adding a younger sibling and companion for Doug. Through the years, the family faced many obstacles. They endured the sudden passing of their beloved father, George in 1987. Doug’s sisters, together with their husbands Dennis, Terry, Julian, and Vince, supported Bette as she persevered in caring for Doug until her 90th year.
On April 10, 2024, Douglas passed peacefully at home with his sister Sheri and brother-in-law Vince, surrounded by his favorite collector dolls, and his music. We know Bette, George, and Doug’s beloved nephew Jason, were waiting to great him as he traveled across the heavenly bridge.
Doug shared a special bond with his family which included his siblings, numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Doug also had the support of family who were with him in more recent years, through every high and low. Those special people included Rachel, Richard, Andrea, Jack, John, Janie, Carmen, and especially Ellen (mama). They were a source of endless love, comfort, and security. They, in turn, were able to see him not as someone with special needs, but as a cherished family member who brought a unique and irreplaceable light into their lives.
In his interactions with others, Doug displayed an unconditional love and acceptance that was both humbling and enlightening. He didn’t see the barriers that too often divide us; instead, he saw people for who they truly are. His capacity to love without judgment or reservation was a lesson to us all in how to be better, more compassionate human beings. Doug also found joy and fulfillment in music. Although his verbal abilities were somewhat limited, he could easily sing the lyrics to some of his favorite musicals such as Mama Mia, Fiddler on the Roof, The Sound of Music and Beauty and the Beast.
As we remember Doug, we are reminded of the indelible mark he has left on our hearts. He taught us about the power of perseverance, the beauty of seeing the world through a different lens, and the boundless capacity of the human heart for love and joy. His life, though marked by challenges, was also filled with triumphs – triumphs of spirit, of love, and of the ability to inspire those around him. His legacy is one of resilience, joy, and an unspoken reminder of the inherent value and potential in each of us. Doug’s spirit will continue to inspire us, and his memory will always be a beacon of hope and love in our hearts.
How does a moment last forever?
How can a story never die?
It is love we must hold on to, never easy but we try.
Minutes turn to hours, days to years then gone.
But when all else has been forgotten, still our song lives on.
The family would like to thank Nancy Gingras, Jane McLane and The Sunnyside Foundation for their loving support, as well as the kind souls at Resolutions Hospice.
A celebration of life is planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to any charitable cause in Doug’s name, would be appreciated.
