Sonny graduated from Basic High School in 1969. At the age of 19, Sonny was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 17th round of the 1969 MLB Amateur Draft. He married Teri Latham and later divorced. He lived most of his life in Henderson.
Sonny was an avid sports fan with baseball being his favorite. He started playing baseball at a young age with the inspiration from his dad. His father went to every game that he could to cheer him on! He loved the accolades Sonny received from his success playing baseball.
Sonny was fun, loving and always the life of the party. He was a great story teller. He is survived by his sisters Dorothy Green and Rosie Gaines, children Christopher “Duke” Latham and Future Earnestine Smith. He cherished his family, especially the time spent with his six grandchildren; Jerrel, Alexis, Jaedyn, Jaya, Ari and Londynn. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews and many friends who have been a part of his life since childhood.
Preceding him in death are his parents Willie and Earnestine Sledge; sisters Gladys Reed, Minnie McDaniel, Viola McCoy, LaNita Sledge and Barbara Sledge; brothers James and Melvin Sledge.
