Tom Yu-Chern Su, devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on April 7, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada at the age of 85. After a brave, years-long battle with pulmonary fibrosis, he left this world peacefully with his beloved wife, Elaine Tong Su, at his side.
Born in January 1940 in Taiwan to Mao-chi Su and Hung-nien Su (Tsai), he was the youngest of six children. As a boy, Tom and his family survived the Japanese occupation of Taiwan during World War II and the 2/28 incident of 1947. Tom attended the prestigious National Chengchi University School of Law, completing a degree in Financial Administration, before immigrating with Elaine to the United States of America. He attended Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State University Los Angeles, graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering while working multiple jobs to put himself through school and support his family.
Tom became a citizen of the United States in 1977, something he counted among his proudest achievements. A gifted storyteller, he loved recounting his childhood adventures and the early years of life in America. He and his wife enjoyed traveling with their children to visit national parks, loading up the family Volkswagen to explore what Tom considered the most beautiful country in the world.
Settling in Rowland Heights, California,Tom proudly worked as an Electrical Engineer in the defense industry for most of his career. When he retired from Northrop Grumman, he relocated to Las Vegas with Elaine in 2002, fulfilling a shared life-long dream.
Tom is survived by his wife of nearly sixty years, Elaine Tong Su, son Dr. Roger Su, daughter-in-law Angel Ho, daughter Regina Su Mangum, son-in-law John Mangum, and grandchildren Bryan Su, Sabrina Ho, and JJ Mangum. He is also survived by his older brother, Yu-Ting Su of Taiwan and many other extended family members across the sea.
A man of quiet strength, Tom imparted his wisdom and love to his family, teaching them resilience, honesty, and integrity. May he rest in peace.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Healthwell Foundation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide financial help to patients for whom health insurance is not enough. Tom received life-prolonging experimental drug therapy with Healthwell's assistance, for which his family is forever grateful.
