Our dear Suzanne Louise Chapel was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and raised all her life in Las Vegas. She was killed by a drunk driver on January 13, 2024. She was pregnant with her second child and 21 years old.
Suzy was too young when she was taken from us, but in her soul she was an artist and we know she would’ve continued to live her life through her creativity and self-expression. She painted on canvas and drew. She knitted hats for her mother and her baby daughter. Suzanne, known to her friends as Suzy, was always crafty, making things, doodling, pulling out large canvases to paint. She also excelled at make-up and hair. Her dream was to be an interior designer. She wanted to go to the Fashion institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles.
To describe her, her mother, Laura, pulled out a box filled with rose petals, drawings and little scraps of paper. Each paper had a song title that reminded Suzy of a special memory or a feeling she wanted to recapture. Music was important to her daily life. Laura remembers Suzy turning up the music in the car, to an excruciating volume, making a bad day into a good one by singing at the top of her lungs, and dancing in the seat of the car.
Suzy was funny and social and loved people and parties, live music and festivals. She loved tattoos and body art. Suzy expressed her love with hugs and full on-expressions of that love, kisses and hugs and loving words. She held nothing back. She gave everyone her all. She loved to travel, surf, explore, and take long car trips. And she loved little kids and animals, especially horses. She always wanted one. And as someone who took life on with vigor, it is no surprise she loved food. Food was important to Suzanne because as a child she had a kidney disease and a restricted diet. Growing up she became a voracious eater, trying everything, her adventurousness expressing itself in everything she did.
Mostly, Suzy’s life was her 5 month old daughter, Auroya. Laura remembers Suzy dressing up Auroya as Snow White on her first Halloween. Suzy wore a matching dress. These photos and memories bring comfort to the family. Suzy is survived by Auroya, her boyfriend Isaiah Armstrong, her devoted mother, Laura Chapel, and her late father Christopher Chapel, her brothers Adam and Samuel Chapel, her grandparents, Roger and Louise Chapel, Daniel and Melanie Winckler and Kay and Larry Mehlhaff, as well as an enormous extended family of aunts and uncles, cousins, and friends who have come to be family.
In lieu of flowers, we are asking people who can, give to the GoFundMe set up to help the family. We appreciate your prayers, thoughts and support.
A visitation for Suzanne will be held Sunday, January 21, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Palm Eastern Mortuary, 7600 S Eastern Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89123. A memorial service will occur Friday, January 26, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Remnant Ministries, 325 E. Windmill Ln., Las Vegas, NV 89123.
