Stephen was born in Binghamton, NY. He graduated from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania in 1968, with a degree in music, and taught in the public schools of Hornell, NY, from 1968 to 1974.
After marrying his beloved, Mary Ann, also a teacher, they moved to Long Island, NY, where Stephen had been accepted into Stony Brook University’s new Physician Assistant program. Following the birth of their first daughter, Piper Elizabeth, and graduation in 1976, they moved to Dansville, New York, where a second daughter, Wendy Suzanne, was born. Stephen practiced medicine as a PA for the next 30 years, both in Nunda, NY, and Rochester, NY. As his reputation for honesty and integrity grew, Stephen was appointed first to the New York State Board for Professional Medical Conduct, and then concurrently to the New York State Board for Medicine.
Stephen and Mary Ann enjoyed adventure in their early married life. Owning a motorcycle, he, Mary Ann and their daughters enjoyed touring the countryside. He and his wife also enjoyed singing and acting in many community theater productions, SCUBA diving, flying airplanes, skiing, and upon moving to Rochester, NY, in 1983, performing with the prestigious Eastman-Rochester Chorus.
In 2005 their spirit of adventure led Stephen and Mary Ann to pull up stakes and move to Las Vegas, where Stephen continued to practice as a PA. He obtained his Master’s Degree in Health Care Administration, and later became a Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Physician Assistants.
As his retirement years approached, Stephen gave little thought to actually retiring . . . he lived not only for his family, but also for his patients, many of whom had become lifelong friends. As a man of deep religious faith, he always considered his work to be his ministry, and truly felt called by God to take care of people.
Stephen is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary Ann, his daughter Piper, son-in-law Jason Hammill, and their sons Jackson and Porter, of Rochester, NY, and his daughter Wendy, son-in-law DJ Cash, and their daughters Kaelin, Jordie, and Chloe, of Helena, MT, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Celebrations of Stephen’s life will take place both in Rochester, NY, and Las Vegas, NV. These will be announced at a later date.
