My favorite memories with Dad show his kindness.  He was a Disciple of Christ with a capital D because that was his religious denomination, Disciples of Christ.  But the name suits him well, and I'm sure I learned the importance of striving to be a good disciple of Christ from his example of kindness.

Looking through hundreds of photos these past two weeks has amazed me how many different activities he did that gave him the opportunity to be with his family.  Some of my favorites were: signing up for a baseball team; flying with him on my first airplane trip to Norfolk, Yorktown and Jamestown, Virginia he planned; bowling on a team with him and Mom when I was in high school; boating; traveling with him to look at colleges before I decided where I would go after high school; going to Atlanta Falcons games when he bought us season tickets one special year; having him visit me at college to watch me play soccer and later to graduate; being thankful for his life experience of knowing what to do when my car clutch went out in the middle of a Manhattan intersection when we went to New York; having him help me decide on an internship in Washington, D.C.; having him and Mom come out to Las Vegas and St. George, Utah for Georgeann's and my wedding reception; hearing Jennifer say that he, Pa, had told her about the moon, him calling her Shirley Temple and Jennifer calling him a silly old king when we lived in his  house in Georgia while I was in law school; Julieann being born where I was born, near where he grew up in Atlanta while we lived at his house; he and Mom visiting after Kristen was born in Las Vegas and Kristen nicknaming him Grinpa and Mom Greenma; Kristen learning to swim at the Texas Hotel pool where they stayed for us to swim and Kevin and I playing pool baseball with the girls, Kevin nicknaming Dad and Mom Cuppa Cuppa; pushing Dad in his wheelchair while he pushed Tanner in his stroller; and reading scriptures and keeping a journal together and talking.

I remember Scott when he worked with Mimms Company in the early 90's he was always kind and had a wonderful smile. 
Scott, I am sure you will be truly missed.  Family you are in our thoughts and prayers!

When I was 14 my mother took me to Atlanta. That trip was full of "firsts" for me. First time flying, first time meeting Aunt Mary (my mother's sister), Uncle Scott, and my 3 cousins. First time water skiing. First time seeing a mountain (Stone Mountain). That trip was a lasting impact on my life. At first I was intimidated by Uncle Scott. He was a stranger, he was big (to me at least) and I was nervous. But it didn't take long for him to put me at ease. By the end of our trip I couldn't wait to see him again. Regrettably, I did not get to spend as much time with Scott and Mary as I would have liked. I saw them occasionally at family events but mainly got to know them through the stories my mother told me. But through those stories, emails over the years with both Scott and Mary, and Facebook connections to my Ray cousins, I feel like I know what kind of man Uncle Scott was. He was something we should all aspire to be. 

My condolences to all my Ray cousins. I hope we will have a chance to get to know each other better and to keep the memories of our parents alive!

I could not have asked for a better Father and a friend.  I have so much to learn from the great examples you set for me, Dad.  I miss you so much!

Dad did so many nice things for me, even when I was a selfish brat of a son.  I remember we used to walk home from Church to our home on Virginia Place in Peachtree Hills on occasion.  The first time we did it, we walked home from First Baptist Church.  We stopped at a restaurant between First Baptist and Peachtree Christian called Mammy’s Shanty.  They served us huge glasses of coca cola.  It was about a 6 mile walk home altogether.  The walks home from Peachtree Christian were about 4 miles.  During those walks I could tell my Dad anything that was on my mind or ask him any question.  I had his full undivided attention.  I remember in later years we jogged most of that distance in the Peachtree Road Race.

Dad loved to sleep in other places besides his own bed late at night.  I remember on many summer nights he would sleep out on a swing in the backyard, so he could cool off.  It often cramped my style on a Friday or Saturday night if I was trying to sneak out my back door to have fun with my buddies.  I remember more recently when I was with him at his hospital room late at night, I was wanting him to go to bed, so I could get back to my room and go to bed as well.  He was in his reclining chair and just wanted to stay up.  After I asked rather pointedly didn’t he want to get in his bed, he replied, no he had been doing this all of his life.  I had to laugh and agree he had me there.

One of my favorite stories Dad told me was about Paul and Carol.  Carol had told Paul some wild statement, such as pigs could fly.  Paul was not convinced, so Carol, said let’s go ask Dad.  Carol ran on ahead and asked Dad to back her up on the story.  So when Paul caught up to Carol and Dad, Paul asked if it was true.  Dad told me looked into Paul’s trusting eyes and Carol’s mischievous grinning face.  Dad replied,  “Well, some say they do and some say they don’t”.  My dad should have run for office.

He and Mom loved to travel in their retirement years.  We have album after album regarding their trips to Europe and Hawaii.  They made great friends by exchanging their homes with others.

Dad and Mom loved to square dance.  The went out to the Mall to dance every week.  I never got to see them in action.

As he got older, and a little senile, he just got sweeter and sweeter.  He never complained.  He was so trusting of us three children and we did our best to be worthy of that trust.  Every time I would check on him, he always felt fine and was always  happy.  The Lord truly blessed Dad in his last days by letting him be content, even when his quality of life was not all that good.

He loved his car rides.  It gave him great pleasure to go out after supper for “a little car ride”.  He would always ask if there was enough gas in the car.

He was very generous.  He was far more generous to me with regard to money, than I have been with my own children.

Dad was a calming influence.  He could walk into a room that full of turmoil and anxiety and make everyone feel at peace.  I remember very well one time my friend Doug and I wanted to go to Myrtle Beach and Doug’s mom and Dad were worried and very uneasy about us going.  Dad came into their living room and made them feel much better about it all.  Mrs Welch commented on what a calming presence he had.

Dad was a great joke teller.  I recently told my son Scott a joke  Dad told me many years ago  Scott nearly bust a gut he was laughing so hard.

Dad was a good artist.  I remember looking at his doodlings as a child and how amazed I was at well he could draw.

He worked with the youth a lot as a young man.  He was a Royal Ambassador Leader when we went to the Baptist Church and then an Assistant Scoutmaster when we went to Peachtree Christian.  I used to go on scout campouts with him when I was just 9.  I remember the boys seemed to really like him.

He loved to take our family on outdoor adventures on Saturdays.  We often went to the north Georgia mountains and had picnics and hiking adventures.

I was in the 5th grade when we bought our first motorboat.  Then we went to the lake every weekend and went waterskiing.  He was always so patient with me even when I was a brat.  We had so many good hours on the lake.  I remember when we rented a mobile home for a whole week on Lake Altoona at Red Top Mountain.  We would go out every morning and the water was smooth as glass.  I learned how to slolam  that week.  Going to the lake was a big part of my growing up with Dad.  I remember we took the Power Squadron Course together.  It was a good experience.

I have fond memories of us being in Indian Guides together.  The slogan was “Pals forever, Son”  “Pals forever, Dad.”  And we will be Pals forever!

He was a very highly respected attorney.  He had a talent for talking people into doing things.  He was a very thorough title attorney.  I learned a lot from him.  I often ran things by him in my early years of law practice.

Dad loved Peachtree Christian Church.  He served as a deacon, elder, trustee and chairman of the Board of Trustees.  He gave generously to the Church of his time, talents and money.

He also loved the Sons of the American Revolution.  He went to their meetings and various functions.  He was president of the Piedmont Chapter one year.

I remember when Grandpa was showing me how to water ski, he and Grandma told me to never give up.  They said that they taught my dad to keep saying "I can and I will," until he finally did.  I've used that mentality in all of my endeavors since.  
I loved how patient and kind he was with everyone and everything.  It seemed like it was almost impossible to frustrate or make him mad.  
One time when I was staying with him and Grandma, he took me to Williams Street to see Cartoon Network's headquarters.  I was really excited about that.  I remember him saying I was so excited to see the outside of some building, but I was more excited to be on a special little trip, just him and me.  I was so excited that he'd make the trip through all of the terrible traffic around that part of town just for me.
I remember how even during all of the rough stuff he had to deal with in his last few years, he never once complained about it all.
He is one of my heroes.  I hope I can someday be as smart, kind, and patient as he was.

I am very lucky that I had Dad as my father.  He always comforted me when I was sad, and rejoiced with me when I was happy.  He was a wonderful grandfather to my children and like a father to my husband, Louie.  We all loved him, and we love him still.  I have so many happy memories with him, I couldn't begin to list them all.  But towards the end of his life, the main thing I remember was how he made me feel important.  He always appreciated everything.  He loved the dinners I served, even though I've never been much of a cook, and he loved to go for rides with me in the evening after supper.  Sometimes we would sing "Good Night  Irene" with the CD I had in my car.  He was a very happy man and he shared his gift of making us all glad to be alive. I miss you Dad, but I know you and Mom are happy, and I'll see you again when my time comes.

Mr Ray was a stable, kind,caring man who made a huge difference in my life during my most difficult time. He was a parent and a advocate. His life was an example to me on how to raise my family and I was privledged to be part of his life even as a tiny part. I'm going to miss him and buying him Ribs at the beach, taking him for rides and answering the eternal question " do you have enough gas??"  I have loved the entire family for the better part of my life. Carol is my best and favorite friend and has been since we were 15. Now I see all 3 together. Mrs Ray, Mr Ray and JP.  All the questions answered and peace found. Good bye for now. See you soon.
