Sammie Lee Boyd was born on September 9, 1940, to Roger(d) and Hattie(d) Boyd of Dearing, Georgia. The fifth child of twelve, born to God fearing farmers, he understood the importance of sowing and reaping. He spent his life sowing love, generosity, and wisdom into the lives he touched.
Sammie attended R. L, Norris High School in Thomson, Georgia, where he met his high school sweetheart, Thelma Cummings(d). After graduating high school in 1960, Sammie enlisted in the United States Air Force. Sammie and Thelma wedded and began a lifetime adventure in 1962 as husband and wife. The military would take them to many places across the globe including Holland, Germany, Georgia, New York, Nevada, and Alaska. Along the way, they became parents to two daughters, Della and Andrea. After 21 years of honorable service, Sammie concluded his military career in 1982. After the military, Sammie decided to “refire, rather than retire.” His career would also include successful endeavors as a real estate agent for Caldwell Banker, an investor in rental property, and a joint owner of The Floral, Gift, and Art Gallery.
In his spare time, Sammie found joy in nature or building with his hands. He was a consummate fisherman, gardener, and carpenter. Sammie used these skills to provide for his family and share the abundance with extended family members and friends.
It was impossible to know Sammie Boyd without experiencing his generous spirit and infectious laugh. He enjoyed cooking and frequently welcomed family and friends to gather at his home and share a meal he prepared. He would then share stories, play dominoes or bid whist, and laugh with his whole being. For those who had fallen on tough times, he did not hesitate to lift them up in word or deed.
More importantly, Sammie was a man of faith. Raised in church, he attended Mays Grove Baptist Church and Poplar Head Baptist Church as a child, where he was baptized. Over the course of his life, he maintained a close relationship with God through prayer and reading the Word. He contributed to the work of the church by giving his time, talents, and finances. His faith in God provided him a life well lived; full of love and laughter. He was blessed, indeed.
On June 22, 2023, Sammie Lee Boyd took his final rest at Centennial Hills Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada. He is survived by his children Della Boyd (Tony Weatherly), and Andrea Boyd; siblings, Marcus Boyd (Margaret, d), Lula Noguera (Cruz, d), Joe Louis Boyd (E. Jean), Annie Miller (Woodrow, d), Pearl H. Hollis (C.O.), Marvin Boyd (Cathy), Elmyria Chivers (Johnny), and Harold Boyd (Valarie); sister in law, Daisy Boyd; grandchildren, Dre Lynn and Terrence Boyd-Weatherly; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
