Lost contact of Bob several years ago but never forgot him.  We participated in a network marketing project together  and became so much more than partners.  I always looked forward to my trips down to Vegas to spend time with Bob and Carol.  He taught me  so much about life and being a good person.  About always doing the right thing even when it wasn't necessarily the easiest thing.  Every time I came down to help with "the business" I always went home a better person.  I remember after meetings, going to Arizona Charlies  for ham steak and eggs losing track of time and realizing it was 1:30 a.m. and I had to be back in Provo to work at 8a.m. racing home and looking forward to my next trip down.  I have never met a such a spiritual giant or someone who cares about others like Bob  did and I will always be a better person because of him.  He touched  many and I am grateful to have been able to have crossed paths with him and Carol.  All my love to Carol and the family.

Elsie and Bob Ashton met Bob when Pete and Bob both worked for the Las Vegas Sun.  Pete first worked in the press room, bundling and loading newspapers.  Later he had the responsibility for several paperboys in his district. 

Elsie and Bob shared their stories of surviving the WWII bombings in London, as Elsie would fix dinner for Bob and Bob.  Anytime Pete would visit them, Elsie would begin making her delicious creations which Bob loved.  His favorite was Yorkshire Pudding.
During the 1960s, Bob asked Pete if he wanted to buy some land in the N-W part of the Las Vegas valley for $150/acre.  Pete said, Oh, I cant afford that, that is the amount of my house payment.  Years later Bob Ashton sold his several acres for over 2 Million Dollars.  Bob tried to teach Pete how to manage his money.

Pete spoke at Bob Ashtons Memorial service, sharing the poem, The Dash. He also shared many hopeful scriptures, of the goodness of Gods love.

We continued to weekly visit Elsie Ashton as she lived in Atria care facility as the Welcome committee.

Pete was always to encouraging to Elsie.  Their friendship endured over 50 years.


        You never realize a guy you met and help a little, you grow and live life together, will one day be an important part of your life.  You dont think about that.  That was how it was with Pete. Pete has always been a part of my life. Stuff progressed.  Life goes on.

        When I first met him, he was living in a motel in North Las Vegas.  He came into the shop looking for work. He was intrigued by the huge size of the pictures we made.   I was running the Art Dept. I watched him as he worked around us: he did things without being asked to do them, he volunteered to do various jobs, he had a cheerful disposition, and he loved to whistle or sing while he worked.  Pete was a just and fair man. We got along really well.  He added joy to our work place.  I admired him a lot.   I liked him, nice guy, a good guy, sincere to my boss, I said,  Hire him.
   But he had NO CAR to get to work.  So I would go and pick him up every morning, bring him to work, then after work I would bring him home to our house, and Dee would feed him. He especially loved her carrot cake.  Then I took him back home again.  We were instantly good friends. I did this until he had enough money saved to buy an old car.
   Everyone loved his jokes.   When he said things, he could make it funny.  Pete made it funny. He was just a fun guy.  I loved my work!   It was something I looked forward to every day.
When he came and worked for the shop, he learned quickly. He was NEVER AFRAID. Hhe was ALWAYS JOYFUL to get to work!   He never grumbled and gripped.  PETE, no matter what you gave him, he was happy to do it.  He was just a good guy.  It was a joy working with Pete Petersen. He made the job worth having.   He was NOT afraid to get in and work.  He was a really hard worker and expected others to do the same.    Pete didnt like slothfulness.  He believed, if you had a job to do, then just do it.  

        HIS 2nd JOB:    In addition to working on the billboards with us, he simultaneously worked for the R J Newspaper.   He would make a run to Pahrump, Blue Diamond or even Death Valley.      
 One day while driving his delivery route, he saw a couple of guys in a city truck, parked down in a ditch, with both of their feet hanging out the side of the truck.  Bob made a U-turn, and hollered at them, Hey  you guys, what are you doing?   Get to work!   My tax money is paying for you to work! 
         Bob came back to the shop and told all of us that story.      
 
        After a long time working together, Bob felt that he has learned enough to start his own business.  When he left DONREY to start his own business, he left a big void, he had been with us for a long time.  He was a part of the institution.   

        We lost track of one another for many years, but then we ended up in the Meadows Stake together.  (A stake connects a group of 5-8 smaller neighborhood wards or churches.)   The last time I saw him at church, I said to Dee,  Bob isnt acting very good today.   

        Carol, you added so much to his life!  I could tell when you came into his life.  I could see it in him!   You will get koodoos in heaven.  You were a good team.  


The Christmas Lights

On December 19th, I taught the lesson in the High Priests Quorum.  The lesson was entitled, REPENTANCE. 

I told the brethren that for the last 16 years I had not decorated the front of my house with lights at Christmas because Adam would go to SLC to spend the holiday with His mother and I would usually not be home but this year after being married for over a year, I had repented and had put up lights on the front of the house. I said, I had taken the white light  on the porch light and put in a pretty green one.  Pres Robert Prince said, By yourself?  I said, No, Mark Rainey did it for me.  They all laughed.  

Two nights later, coming to the front door after work, there was a sack with a note attached  it read, 
I understand you have only a green light.here are some lights
MERRY CHRISTMAS, SANTA!!!!

 So now,  I called Mark Rainey up and asked him if he would put them up for me, which he did (I later learned that he was the Santa).
 A couple nights later, noticed that Pres. Prince had no lights up this year.  So I asked his daughter Julie, to change the white bulb with my green one or one like my green one.which she did.

Maybe next year I will go around to the High Priests homes and put in a green one wherever someone doesnt have lights up!!!!   






1993 2-10  The Nativity Pageant + the New Star
Yearly the LDS church on Charleston (by the water district), puts on a beautiful 30 minute, outdoor Christmas pageant, which was free to the community, depicting the prophecy and birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
I was asked to help paint the scenery for the production.  I donated materials, paint, and a lot of time and energy to complete the project.  I was even asked to design and make a special Nativity Star; and after much prayer and pondering, I received some great insight as how to create this star.  It turned out magnificent, and hung high over the manger scene.
My granddaughter, Tassia, got to come and help me paint  Jesus Manager as she said it. 


BREAKING AND ENTERING

Around August 3, 1993, Carol went to Payson to help Pennie can fruit.  I went to Marysvale, Utah where my friend Jim Sill lived.  My son stayed home.  

My friend, Jim Sill and I drove into Richfield to have dinner.  Before going to Topsfield to eat, we stopped at the local market, Rogers Market.  Jim said they had a great bakery and wanted to show me.   As we stood by the bakery, I was amazed at how many people were shopping , then I realized that it was Friday afternoon when most people do their shopping.  

As I stood looking at all the tempting cookies and donuts, and other items one finds in a bakery, a lady approached me and asked, Sir are you in a hurry?  No, I am not, I replied.  She went on to tell me that she was from Bicknell and s she went to put her groceries in her van, she realized that she had locked her keys inside and would I mind trying to help her get into her van.  We walked out to the van and it was a very new model, one in which the locks go down into the door when locked.  I told her I could not get into it and explained why.  I then suggested that we call the local police and see if they would come down with their Slim-Jim (a tool to get into locked cars) and help her out.  Inside the store we got on the phone and as she explained her dire straits to the police I found myself vainly proud that of all the many people in the store shopping, she had chosen me to ask for help.  Aha, I exclaimed, my countenance must be improving from clean and righteous living, why. . .my face must be a-glow with heavenly radiance!  Soon she finished with her call and said that the police would be right down.  As she turned to go she again thanked e for my help.  She walked away for about 10 feet and turning said these words. . .The reason I asked you to help me, was because of all the people in the store you look more than anyone else like someone who could break into a car!!!!

My countenance immediately came back to earth as Jim said to me, Hey shes right. . . . go look in the mirror!


My FIRST and MY LAST BILLBOARD

Today is October 18, 1998. . . . and today I, in all probability have worked on my last billboard.  It was the Factory Stores Outlet.  As the day progressed I reflected time and time again back. . . . 
and soon I was back to April 1961, 37 years ago. My life changed so dramatically that day in 1961 when I went to work at NAGELE OUTDOOR, soon to become DONREY OUTDOOR.  I remember so vividly walking into the building and talking with the art director.  His name was Smitty . . . and he listened carefully as I asked for a job.  He replied, I am sorry but at the present time we just do not need anyone.  I LOOKED AT HIM RIGHT IN THE EYE AND SAID, IF YOU WILL WORK ME FOR ONE WEEK, IF YOU LIKE WHAT I DO THEN HIRE ME, IF YOU DONT YOU WONT OWE ME A CENT.  WELL, HE SAID, YOU CANT BEAT A DEAL LIKE THAT CAN YOU?  And so it was that on the April day in 1961, I began at Donrey or Nagele.
The rest of that year is burnt within my memory.  How excited I was at 21 that day!  That night I called Mom and reported to her of my good luck.  At that moment I thought it was good luck but later, I came to realize it had nothing to do with luck.  The day would come when I would come to know that going to apply at Nagele was under the direction of a kind and loving HEAVENLY FATHER.  
Those days of that first week found me everywhere, sweeping floors, asking journeyman painters if I could clean their brushes, keeping the paint area clean and neat as possible.  I came in early and stayed late. . . I was thrilled to have this opportunity.  At the end of the week, the 3 journeyman painters went to Smitty and said, Keep this young man. . .   and so it was that these 3, who I called MY PERSONAL THREE NEPHITES: JIM REBER, DON GRINNELL AND DON HADCLIFF SPOKE IN MY BEHALF.  I went to work full-time as a sign-painter.  I still recall the names of employees there that first year.  Chick, Art, Neil, Dick Spomer, Zim and Alberta.
Those were great days for me . . . Jim and Don G especially started to do what I came to know later as MISSIONARY WORK.  One day Jim said to me, this was before I started to go to church with him) PETE, IF YOU EVER WOULD LIKE TO GO TO CHURCH WITH ME, JUST ASK.  Then he never said another word about church but he took me to work with him all the time. Often they invited me to have dinner at their homes.  Soon they invited me to set up chairs for a meeting, or come and listen to a lesson I am going to teach on Sunday. . . . after about 6 months I said to him. . .  I would like to go to church with you.  Don Grinnell would take me to MIA in his ward and Jim would drive to NLV and take me to church in his ward at 8th and Franklin then to him home for a delicious meal.   
WHEN I FELL 35 YEARS LATER FROM A BILLBOARD, JIM REBER AND DON GRINNELL, AND DENNIS GREGORY WERE THE FIRST ONES TO THE SHOP TO OFFER THEIR HELP!  


I feel fortunate to have known Bob as a friend.  He was so supportive and helpful at the Las Vegas FamilySearch Library.  Indeed, he will be missed.

I have had the greatest of respect for Bob over many years.  During one of those early years I had spoken on occasion about an experience I had in Cambodia while serving in Vietnam.  It was about a time when I felt I needed strength from the Lord due to the situation we were in.  I found another soldier who was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints.  We were in a rice paddy.  there were a few inches of water on the ground and it was drizzling rain as it had for hours. It was just before dark.  I asked my friend if he would pray with me.  We knelt down in that soaked ground and each of us offered a pray seeking protection and peace.  One day Bob gave me a gift.  The gift was a drawing he had done reflecting that moment kneeling in the rain.  It has been on a wall in my home since 1991.  I just wanted to share this special gift.

I remember every time Grandpa Bob came over he had something new to share with me. Whether it was a new trick or a story or experience, he always had something to share. He also was happy to see us and we were happy to see him. He was always active and enjoyed playing with us. He was always a fun grandpa.

I remember him sitting at the desk at the family history library doing indexing for hours.

Be Patient 
Bob always expressed a kind interest in the individual.  He would ask questions that expressed his interest, humor, and love for people.  I have always appreciated the patience and kindness he displayed with others.  While visiting with him the Sunday before he died, and hoping to do something to help relive or lift him, I asked him, Bob, what would you have me do for you. His answer, after a long thoughtful pause, was not something to do, but something to be.  Just be patient... and then his kindness kicked in, but you are already.  The presence of mind was impressive, particularly in the circumstances of his health: not to receive a temporary relief, but to give a wise and lasting counsel.  

I will always remember and love the joy Bob looked for, brought, and shared with my children (his grandchildren).  Watching that interaction is a cherished memory, and an example of unselfish love that will always make me smile.

Every time I think of Brother Peterson it brings a smile to my face! When I was younger, around 11 years old, brother Peterson was my Sunday school teacher and my scout master, he was a big influence for me in a very important time in my life. I still remember all the stories he told me during his lessons in Sunday school, stories which taught me the importance of listening to the holy ghost and staying true to my own values. I think he really is the reason why I was able to have the strength to say no to cigarettes or drugs when I was offered them by my friends as a teenager. He taught me the importance being honest and not stealing. And the best thing is, that he taught me all of this by putting a smile on my face! The stories and lessons he taught were always entertaining; he understood the importance of laughter! I wish that I had had the chance to tell him how much all of those stories meant to me before he passed, but I am sure he is looking down on us from heaven and smiling. He was also the first scout master I ever had, and was with me when I received my first merit badge. I'd like to thank him for the first memories I have of scouting, which I think eventually led me to becoming an eagle scout. 

Bob Petersen was an amazing man who lifted the spirits of all those he touched. I am truly grateful that he was able to be a part of my life. You will be missed by your family and your friends, thank you for all the good times. God be with you til we meet again.

My favorite memory of Grandpa Bob is at Pinecrest. He would sit in his camping chair and chuckle or show us magic tricks. I loved the magic trick where he would put a handkerchief in the middle of his fist and shove it down with his thumb. We had to say the magic words "All-a peanut butter sandwich!" And then the handkerchief would disappear! I could never figure out how he did it. But when I turned 8, he promised to show me one of his magic tricks, and I chose that one. He would wear a fake thumb and then put the scarf into it, and then he put the fake thumb back on his finger. I researched a lot of magic tricks after that, trying to find more tricks to share with him. I love him so much. He is a good man and I am excited to see him again.

Bob showed up for life! 
Loved the way he would be present in the moment with you.  Truely interested in what was happening in your life.  His humor brought a smile and his stories brought truth.  

An artist in life but learned the art of life.  
His journals kept love and life alive.
His tender affections of writing "love notes" to Carol adored the walls.

One of the things I always liked about Bob and Carol visiting our family is that they'd always give me a hug at the end of the visit and tell me what a great family I had. I frequently wondered about that, as I know what our family is dealing with, or my own shortcomings. But after hearing so many stories of how Bob never really looked for or at anyone's shortcomings, and only saw their potential as Heavenly Father's children, I'm starting to understand what he was up to. Well, that and my family is pretty great. ;) Love you, Bob.

When I was around 5 or 6 yrs old and we were visiting the Mahnkens and Grandpa Bob was also there.  And, yes, this is another magic story - he loved his magic tricks.  He was sitting on the couch and making things disappear by throwing them.  My cousin Rayna and I were looking around the house finding things for him to make disappear.  Each time, he succeeded.  We were SO amazed.  So we looked for harder things, wanting to find the one thing he would not be able to make disappear.  Finally we found a 5-pound weight, and took it to him.  We were sure he could not possibly make it disappear.  We watched so carefully as he threw it, and sure enough, it was gone. WHAT?!?!  We were shocked.  Shortly after, when someone else asked him to make a coin disappear, I watched him and noticed he slipped it into his pocket.  That made sense.  What I couldn't figure out was how he got the 5-pound weight to fit in his pocket.

What I learned from Grandpa Bob was a sense of wonder, not just through his magic tricks.  He was so supportive and understanding of everyone.  He taught this through his actions.  He inspired you to be more like the person he already saw you to be.

One of my favorite memories of Grandpa is when we used to go to the ice-cream shop around the corner called the Inside Scoop. We would go each time someone had a birthday.  His favorite flavor was Strawberry Cheesecake and Black Cherry.  I'm not sure why but he loved to get pictures of when his face was smeared with ice-cream.  He loved to go and he looked forward to it each birthday.

I remember a time when I was 6 years old. It was Monday afternoon and time for FHE.  Us kids had just gotten back from playing at the park when we lived in the white house on Behmer.  Dad told us to say Alla-Peanut-Butter-Sandwich, when suddenly Grandpa and Grandma appeared from the baby's room when Spencer was a baby. And that's how I remember they got to Family Home Evening one night.

I loved it when Grandpa would tell jokes and stories.  My favorite one was The Reverent Cricket.  He said when he used to teach the 10 year old boys there was one boy who was particularly rowdy. One week as Grandpa was teaching the lesson, he looked down and saw a cricket in the classroom.  He got an idea and told the boy to watch how the cricket was being so reverent.  It was quiet and still.  He said to the boys, "Now when you are being reverent you will see this cricket chirping, but if you are being too loud then it will not chip."  The boys all stared expectantly at the cricket waiting silently.  As the boys waited for a minute, suspense built when the cricket chipped.  Years later some of the boys would still remember the story of the Revert Cricket.  

I love Grandpa very much and he was very special to me.

Bob had a gift to make each person he talked with feel like they were the most important person in the world to him.  He made you feel loved.  I first found this out when I was around 11yrs old when my mom and Bob started dating the first time.  He would take me on walks and find out about me.  For a girl who was yearning for a father, that won my heart.  I was devastated when they stopped dating.  Years later, when my mom and Bob reconnected,  I was thrilled.  Especially in discovering that we picked up right where we left off.  He was the father I had longed for and helped fill a void.  He was always there to listen and let me know he loved me no matter what.  I will cherish him forever for giving me that gift.

Grandpa Bob was always loving and kind and always ready to put a smile on our faces. "Alla Peanut Butter Sandwich" is something I remember from my youth. My brother and I would try to figure out how he was doing his magic tricks and then he'd rattle his teeth at us and make us both jump. I love how kind he was and his example of loving, dedicated service.

When I was about 6yrs old, I wanted to do magic just like Grandpa Bob.  When we went to visit, I had Grandpa sit on the couch to watch me do magic.  I showed him my coin, then told him to close his eyes while I made it disappear.  While his eyes were closed, I ran over to my make-shift bed and hid the coin.  Then I ran back and told Grandpa to open his eyes.  He was so amazed.  Then I would have him close his eyes again, I ran and got the coin, ran back, and told him to open his eyes again.  He made me feel so good about my magic trick.

In March of 2015 when Great-Grandma Elaine died, I got to go to California for the funeral because my mom couldn't go.  I flew up with Grandpa Bob and then Grandma Carol met us there because she was already there.  When we were on the airplane for my first time Grandpa talked to the passenger next to him and made a new friend.  When we got there we stayed at Aunt Kim's house.  She had lots of fun games.  I played a game of Monopoly with Grandpa and Braeden that lasted for about 3 days.  When it was finally over I just happened to win!  It was the best game of Monopoly I ever played.  While I was there Braeden and I made a fort, fed the chickens,and ate treats.  One time we got slushies and my lips turned blue because it was Blue Raspberry.  Then another night we had Root Beer floats and Braden got a HUGE scoop of ice-cream but he didn't eat it all. At Great-Grandma's funeral we watched two people fold a flag and they gave it to Aunt Wendy.  After the reverent part I got a picture with Grandma by Great-Grandma's coffin.  After the burial we drove to a park by a bridge where Jenna pretended to throw me over the side. Saturday we went to the beach and saw sea lions. The next day we left for home, and I felt like Braeden had become my new big brother. On the way home I got to sit by the window again, and after the flight the pilot let me sit in the cock pit. It was awesome!  I felt really special and the pilot even let me wear his hat. 

Some of my favorite things I used to do with Grandpa were taking walks, play baseball at the park, and listen to his jokes and stories.  No one could tell a story like Grandpa!

Every Monday Grandpa used to come to our house in Overton for Family Home Evening. When he got here me and Grandpa would always go outside to watch the birds on the wire.  Then later he would always tell me to go outside and check to see how many birds there were. One time when he came there were 99 birds on the wire. Then a long time forward Grandpa couldn't come anymore cause he was sick.  Daddy had to put an oxygen tank by his bed and fill him up with oxygen. Then he died a few days later.  Grandpa was happy to die cause he finished his work. 

I always loved him, he was always there when we were at his house. He would always watch us play. The end.

Spencer Rumsey
7 yrs old

  Bob Petersen was my Foster Father for a few months. He opened his home for me and took care of me during a very unhappy time in my life. I will always be grateful for the kindness and compassion that he showed me.

Being around Bob always made me want to do better. I think it was because he was genuine in his desire to serve others and to share his love of Jesus Christ and to share His Gospel. I remember when he was the Stake Mission President, going with him to inspect the full time missionaries apartments. His love for them and their love for him was apparent. Serving with Bob was a joy. He never met an assignment he didn't accept with willingness.
I remember the first time I met Bob, it was at a Primary in-service meeting at Caroline Robinson's home. As our Primary President in the Curtis Park Ward, she had invited Bob, who was in the Rainbow Vista Ward, to teach a lesson on how to be a more effective Primary Teacher. He truly was a master Primary Teacher, the key to what he taught was that if they know you love them, they will listen to what you have to say.
Bob shared many of his life experiences with me and others, they were usually humorous and had a message. One I still retell whenever I'm teaching about finances is when he decided to begin tracking all of his expenditures in an effort to have better control of his money. After two weeks he told me that he was either going to have to give up Big Gulps or stop keeping track. Both humorous and a lesson.
One of the many things I admired about Bob was his generous heart. Norm relayed to me a great example of this when one time about counting tithing he asked me if I knew that Bob paid more in Fast Offerings than he did in tithing. Just another example of where his heart was and in turning his faith into action.
It is too bad that Danielle's is no longer in business. It would have been a great place to say goodbye to Bob with one last hot fudge sundae. Norm, Bob, and I all loved our ice cream, but more often than not it was Bob's idea to end whatever we were doing at Danielle's.
Tanya and I were so happy for Bob when he shared his plans and excitement with us when he got back together with Carol. It was clear that you worked well together and made each other happy.
I have read that the only opinion of us that really matters is what our Heavenly Father thinks of us. I know our Heavenly Father thinks well of how Bob Petersen lived his life. Even to the end, Bob was a great example for all of us in how to live our lives. We will miss our dear friend Bob.

The Legacy of Bob (his Eulogy)
 
Most of us, when we think of Bob, have a story we could share. When we think of Bob, here's some of the things we'll remember:
*Jokes and stories- he always had one ready to share. 
Mark and Tanya Larson said, Just thinking of him brings a smile to my face. I think that might be what we will remember most and what Bob was best at, bringing a smile to the faces of all he came in contact with.
*Pranks- not too long ago he was hiding donuts from groups at the Family History Library or you might have received a personal call from the LDS Church Headquarters or a President of the United States
*Voice Impersonations- John Wayne or Ronald Reagan, anyone?
*Magic Tricks
Rayna Mahnken, a grand daughter shared a memory: after we got home Grandpa Bob said we could open the garage door with magic.  All it took was that special, magical word- Alla Peanut Butter Sandwich.  Well, the kids yelled and nothing happened.  Rayna didn't notice her mom, me, run around the side of the house while Grandpa told them he didn't think they said it loud enough.  So, they yelled again and the door magically opened.  She now considers the word, "Alla-Peanut-Butter-Sandwich", magical for a completely different reason.
Tassia Steggell, his oldest grand daughter, said that he taught her that what couldn't be fixed with an "Alla-Peanut-Butter-Sandwich" could be fixed with the peace found only in prayer.
*His Artwork and Billboards
How many of you have had your picture taken next to his life size rendition of the Savior?
And his billboards dotted the freeways of four states for many years.
And he inspired even more people as young artists.
One of the young artist he inspired and mentored was Randy Metcalf. Randy looked up Bob a few years ago after not seeing him for 25 yrs. He wanted Bob to know what a difference he had made in his life.  They first met while both working at The Sun newspaper here in LV.  Randy was still in high school, while Bob was about 22 to 23 and was the old guy' of their work crew.  Kennedy had just been assassinated and Randy had drawn a portrait of Kennedy hoping to get it published in the paper to start his art career. Bob noticed it and complimented him on his work, saying his proportions were perfect... but it's too flat.  Randy was offended and said, just who do you think you are?... ridiculing my drawing? Bob responded, I drew the exact same portrait on your lunch break you should take a look at it.  Randy took him up on the opportunity with expectations of being able to ridicule him back.  When Randy saw Bob's rendition of Kennedy he was dumbfounded. I witnessed the most remarkable drawing my eyes had ever seen. The drawing was so realistic and 3-dimensional that I felt as though I could reach around to the back of the drawing's head I could not believe an artist could create such vivid detail! After viewing Bob's artwork, Randy felt like he could never show or brag about his artwork again.  Upon his return to work, he asked Bob 101 questions about art.  Bob promised to teach him everything he knew about art. This began a mentoring friendship that would last years. Later in life he realized that he had received a diploma from the master, Bob Petersen.
*Patriot, he had a deep love for his country and backed up his beliefs through action.
He even ran for a local political office once
*His Love of Music and him constantly singing or whistling
He would often tell Adam and Angie to "Keep a smile on your face and a song in your heart. Adam said that the songs in his heart never stopped. And his melodies are embedded in my being.
Food~ esp. donuts, ice cream, and chocolate chip cookies- anyone ready for a donut run or some ice cream?
*Playing with children- life didn't seem complete unless he was playing with a child.
I think Sariah Rumsey summed this up best when she said MY GRANDPA BOB IS THE BEST GRANDPA EVER! I think all of his grandkids would agree.
 
Without Bob, my family literally would not be here today (even though he is not my biological father). But it was through him that I met my husband. My husband, Sean, served here in LV on an LDS mission about 25 years ago. He was one of the many missionaries that Bob has worked with over the years. But the details for how we met is a story for another day.
 
As I've talked with many who knew and loved Bob, I've come to realize that many of us have a story like this about Bob. Where knowing Bob has changed our lives. Not just entertained us, but made us better people, and encouraged us to want to be our best selves. He loved helping people who seemed to be wandering and needing guidance.  He did this through games, hugs, walks, and talks.  He would often take someone on a walk (or in some other way take them under his wing), and during these quiet, personal moments he would let you know that you were valued, that you were of worth, and that he cared. He loved others the way Christ loves us and was one of the best examples I knew of the Savior and His ministry. One of Bob's friends, after hearing of his passing, commented that he didn't know a man who was more prepared to meet his Savior.
 
But what made a man like Bob.
 
Robert Clayne Petersen, lovingly known as Bob to most and Pete to some, was born in Lewiston, UT in 1939 to Robert Christian Petersen and Mildred Thompson Petersen.   He could still point out the home of the midwife where he was born.  Although he was born in Lewiston, his home was twenty miles away in Clarkston. He said that Clarkston was a great place to grow up.  (And for those of you that don't know Lewiston and Clarkston are way up in Northern Utah, almost to the Idaho border). He had a lot of fun memories being raised in a small town in the 40's and 50's. 
 
Life in Clarkston helped to shape and guide him to become a great man throughout the years. His jokester attitude was present even as a young child. They would play in the barn and figure out inventive new ways to create swings (without dying), wake up at night and build snow drifts to try to stop the school bus from being able to drive them to school the next morning, and ring the town bell in the middle of the night.  His love of music was instilled through singing with some of his favorite people; his Grandpa Thompson while on long walks through the orchard and his Uncle James while working on the hay baler. His 6th grade teacher inspired him to be an artist when he complimented his artwork and said, That's good enough to be a Rembrandt!   He loved that his uncle was always ready with a magic trick, which later inspired him as a Grandpa to create magic of his own.
 
He left his mark a couple of times on Clarkston. Literally. One time he was returning from the fields on a hay cutter with Lester Thompson. The town had just had all their dirt roads paved into new oil roads. Bob looked behind them as they were driving through town and saw that the hay cutter had fallen down and was leaving grooves in the new road. Another time Bob was waiting on a hay baler and found some matches. To help fill the time he would light a match and try to see how close he could get the flame to his fingers.  Then one match got too close and before he new it the dry summer fields were burning up.  That fire ended up burning down almost 50 acres of wheat that year.  Forty years later he was passing through town with his brother Jim when they saw smoke and went to go help.  When someone recognized him, they said, Bobby, have you been playing with matches again?
 
Although he had good memories in Clarkston, he also had hard times in his childhood. When he was twelve polio came to Clarkston. He and his brother Jim were some of the first to contract it in the area.  But their father's quick actions got them to the hospital fast enough to prevent many of the devastating effects that many polio survivors have.  Shortly after contracting polio, he lost his father in a car accident.  Bob struggled with this loss for many years and the changes it created in his life. 
 
Bob floundered to find his place in the world. Later, he wanted to go into the Navy to follow in the footsteps of his favorite uncle, James.  But after two days of unsuccessfully trying to wear the wool Navy uniform, his lifelong eczema just wouldn't allow it; he was medically discharged from the Navy.  He felt like a failure with this rejection and continued to search for his place.
 
During this time Bob found himself drifting to new experiences and sometimes homeless, but would often hitchhike home to be with his mom for the holidays. Eventually, he started working for The Sun newspaper in Las Vegas.  He wore several hats while at The Sun, but most enjoyable was sharing his art talents through portrait submissions for articles.  During this time he also began his family.  Angie and Adam were the biggest joys in his life and spending time with them was what he lived for. As a father of two children, he taught them to pray and write in their journals.  He fervently believed that capturing memories of the experiences in life that bring joy is a key to happiness. He was an example of what he taught.  He diligently typed (on his old type writer) or wrote in his journal every day up until the last two weeks of his life.
 
He enjoyed using his artistic talents at The Sun so much that he began seeking other opportunities that would allow him to use these skills more often. This eventually led him to the billboard industry.  He was determined to get his foot in the door.  He approached a company and said, I'll work for 2 weeks for free, if you like my work you can hire me, if not you don't owe me anything.  Who can resist Bob, of course he was hired. He eventually started his own billboard business, Magic Brush Signs and Billboards America; where he worked on billboards in 4 different states.  This is where he became known as Pete Petersen. He would often take Angie or Adam out on jobs as he traveled to sites and created many special memories with them.  
 
Bob was also a self taught man.  He did not attend college or even graduate from high school. But he knew the importance of seeking wisdom.  He always found mentors to help guide him in his life, both professionally and spiritually.  He was always reading self help books (like books on leadership and finding success), learning new words in the dictionary and collected stories, poems, and inspiration about overcoming life's many difficulties.  He truly believed we could overcome life's obstacles and trials. Rising above them to a higher spiritual plane, where we would find peace and love.
 
One of the other memories he instilled in his children's lives was baseball, especially with Adam.  Bob once drove all the way from Las Vegas to Salt Lake just to watch Adam play in one of his baseball games and then turned around and drove right back to LV.  Or he drove Adam out to LA just to watch a baseball game. He coached Little League for several years. And Adam and his friends would often get ice cream or donuts after a game.  But the highlight of his life was a special trip that Adam took Bob on.  Adam took Bob to a baseball game in Wrigley Field, which was spectacular; but then they went for a long drive.  Finally Adam led Bob out to a baseball field in the middle of a cornfield. At first Bob couldn't figure out where they were or why Adam had brought him here.  Then it clicked.  They were standing in the middle of the Field of Dreams (from the movie). This was a cherished memory for them both.
 
One of the other highlights of his life was Carol, his love and Eternal Companion.  They originally met in 1981 at at dance. It was an instant romance and they quickly found themselves spending a lot of time together.  At one point during that weekend, Bob pulled off his shoes, threw them in the air and yelled, I found her, I found her, I found the girl of my dreams! but after dating for a year and a half it seemed like it was not to be.  They both buried their feelings and moved on with life. Eleven years later, Bob came across a magazine advertisement for a mutual friend and thoughts of Carol again began to enter his life.  After wondering what had become of Carol for several days, he finally contacted her and they set up a date to go to the temple.  Well, my mom, had recently been through a difficult divorce and was looking forward to see Bob again. During this reunion, she wanted to get a look at his heart.  A plan was quickly created that would do just this and give Bob a great entry for his journal.  Mom showed up dressed up as an old woman: flour to whiten her hair, makeup to add wrinkles and a sallow complexion, frumpy clothes and a pillow in her dress to add to the midline. I hardly recognized her when she showed up at my apartment.  Bob also soon arrived and upon meeting Carol again, showed no reaction to the physical appearance of my mom.  It was just a reunion with two dear friends who hadn't seen each other in a long while.  Bob went out to the car to get his church clothes to change before going to the temple. He later admitted that he almost bolted right there, but the Spirit whispered to him that he had made a promise to take her to the temple. It didn't matter what life had dealt her, he could at least take her to the temple.  At the same time, my mom was inside panicking.  She didn't want to blow this date with Bob.  She quickly changed into her regular clothes, brushed out the flour, washed her face, and reapplied her makeup. (I kept telling her she needed to wait until being inside the temple to make the Big Reveal' but she didn't want to risk it.)  After Bob had changed, she came out. Bob didn't react AT ALL.  There was absolutely no change in his disposition even though she had just taken forty years off of her appearance. I was amazed.  He simply asked if she was ready to go to the temple now. (I think that was a question she had been waiting for eleven years to hear him ask)  Over the next few months while they were dating he wrote in his journal, that he amazed how much he kept thinking of her and missing her and realized he didn't think he'd ever stopped loving her.  Of course they were soon married and another chapter in his life began. 
 
In 1996 Bob's life would change again when he fell 40 feet off one of his billboards.  The first miracle happened when a tree broke his fall, saving him from an instant end. He was transported by ambulance to the trauma center but was released after only a day. After returning home it was clear that things were not normal. He returned to the emergency room where they found further injuries that were not originally diagnosed: bruised brain, fractured skull, broken clavicle, punctured lung, and fractured ribs.  After an induced coma, and as soon as Bob was conscious and able to move around again, he would often roll out of bed, especially in the middle of the night, and pour out his heart to God and petition him for healing. After a total of 17 days in the hospital, he was eventually released again and this was the second miracle- his body had healed to the point that he didn't even need any outpatient care or further physical therapy.  
 
When my mom had originally found out about his accident and while he was unconscious she told him, You are not going to die. God is not finished with you yet.  Apparently, God had agreed.  The Lord had healed him and saved his life.  This was not the first time that the Lord had spared his life.  During that wheat fire as a kid, he had been so scared of getting a whipping by his dad that he hid under the tire of truck. After hiding a while and without realizing it the owner of the truck was getting ready to leave. Just before the truck drove away (and over Bob) someone reached out and pulled him to safety.  And later in high school, he was involved in a car accident where the car flipped over. He walked away with only a broken wrist.
 
Bob has felt the Lord's presence and blessings in his life many times. One of his most tender memories was shortly after his father died.  On a cold winter night, he awoke with the desire to go to his father's grave.  He put on his coat and walked out into the cold night.  When he got to the cemetery, he knelt on his father's grave and began to pray.  While praying he began to feel warm and peaceful. He knew that his father still loved him and was with him. As he walked home, it began to snow. He remembered not even feeling cold, the warmth he had felt during the prayer lingered with him and he knew he was not alone. That was the beginning of his testimony of the truthfulness of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.  That testimony and spiritual strength has been with him in varying degrees throughout his life.  He struggled and questioned at times, but those struggles helped to solidify and strengthen him, making him the great man that he became. His favorite place was the temple and he spent the last 15 years of his life working in the LV Temple and the last seven of those years, he was also a missionary at the Family History Center.  I think that was the hardest part for Bob was when he told the temple that he would need to take a break from working there.
 
His spiritual strength and guidance helped many of us on our own personal journeys. 
Pennie Rumsey, a step-daughter, said, Looking back I can see so many crossroad moments in my life that you were there to point me toward the Lord.
Sue Munson, his ex-wife (who he has always had a good relationship with), also shared, Bob never quit teaching, and he longed for us all to be more like him and ready for that glorious adventure I am sure he is witnessing.
And Katelyn Mahnken, a granddaughter, said, Thank you for helping me understand that what you prioritize and find most important in this life is what you will have and do.
 
I'd like to close with Bob's own words. Angie, his daughter, found this in one of his journal entries:
One point of life I am thankful I have become acquainted with is, that time goes fast, minutes into hours, hours into days, days into years, and years into decades. I know there are those who believe I have lived foolishly, for they say he cares not for wealth, but wealth to me is a secondary point in bringing one to a sense of happiness. I consider myself to be richer than most, for I have learned the great secret of love, that is to love all men regardless and unconditionally. I have felt the joy that comes to one's heart when he feels no bitterness or distrust, or guile towards his fellows.
I have learned and know the joy of giving of oneself to those who are less fortunate than I. There are so many who feel that happiness is wealth, but I have always been happy to be myself and to share my life with others. Men are sometimes foolish when they equate joy with wealth. For me, let me live my life, without masks, without yearning for another gold brick in which to add to a foundation made of gold. Rather, give me quiet moments in which to see the petal fall from a flower, to watch a seagull stretch its wings across the azure sky or play with a child at his game. This then to me is the great secret of life: To love every man unconditionally regardless of what comes back to me and when one is wronged to forgive completely -     
 
To pay tribute to Bob, I would ask that we each search within ourselves for opportunities where we can forgive more completely-  to those in our lives and especially ourselves and to find opportunities to love more fully- all those that we find within our reach.  That through these actions we might let God's love grow within us and change us into better people, just as Bob experienced that own mighty change within himself.  I believe that is why Bob loved the temple so much, because he wanted everyone that he knew and loved to join him in that Celestial Kingdom that awaits us.

Bob and I's friendship goes way back to the old 2nd and 8th ward chapel on 8th and Linden Street in Las Vegas.  I was a deacon passing the sacrament and Bob was a priest blessing the sacrament. Bob was always trying to catch our attention to make us laugh by staring at us and then flash all of his teeth at us if we looked at him .

I am also fond of the memories in helping Bob construct the spook alleys in the church on Carl and Saylor Way during the Halloween season parties for the youth and ward.

We also enjoyed many callings together with the young men's programs.  We worked with the Priest Quorum 16-18 year old often and developed a sincere and loving bond with our group of young men.  Bob made sure we had frequent reunions with our young men we taught as they got older, at least every 3 to 4 years.  We had 5 or 6 of the young men return home even when most had gotten married and we would get together somewhere in town and play pool (billiards) and just catch up on how things were going on in each of their lives and ours.

At one time Bob and I attended the Wood Badge program in the Boy Scout training for men and were in the same Bob White patrol camping and learning the scout patrol method of helping young men gain knowledge, orderly conduct and good friendships for life.

Bob and I had the privilege of being Temple ordinance workers for 2 years on the Saturday evening sessions.  On one of these Saturday assignments in the temple I remember Bob and I were approached in one of the hallways by President Dixon, at the time, and he very seriously asked if we liked his new tie tack which was a silver CTR symbol and of course we said, "Yes".  Then President Dixon asked , "You brethren know what this means, right?"  We looked at each other and smiled almost simultaneously said, "Choose the Right."  He smiled and acted very disappointed at the same time and said, "Nope, I think when we are here in the Temple serving it means current Temple recommend."  We both chuckled reverently and thanked him for his loving reminder and encouragement at the end of a long evening.

Last and not least Bob and I's eternal friendship will always be reminded of our great conversations and discussions of the gospel and our personal lives experiences as we would almost every Saturday night after our five hours of temple ordinance work together stop at Winchell's doughnuts on Eastern and 95 South about 10:30 PM for our weekly "HOT" fresh out of the oven doughnut and apple fritters.  It didn't even have to be on those Saturday nights I would get a call from Bob out of the blue saying, "Were are you, I've been waiting here at Winchell's for over and hour and the doughnuts are not hot now."  Of course we had a good laugh and had a short chat anyway.  I will ALWAYS miss those chats until we meet again.

Brother Petersen is one of the most influential people I had the Honor of knowing. When we were kids  he took Adam and I to California. He gave us the choice between going to Disneyland or a Red Soxs Angels game. Being kids Adam and I chose DL. So we spent the day at Disneyland, it was my first time. The next day on the way home the truck somehow turned into the Angels stadium. There was a guy selling tickets to the sold out game. Bob bought two ticket and sent us on our way. We were right next to the Red Sox bull pin. It was the last game of the series, the Red Sox beat the Angels and were headed to the World Series. The year was 86 the year that Bill Buckner missed the ground ball which was the start to the Mets come back win. He made it possible for me to have not only 1 but 2 of the biggest 1st time events in my life. I'm still to this day a Boston Red Socks fan to this day. 
Thank you Bob for not only all the memories but for being the hope and light in a young mans life that was pretty dark at the time.

My favorite memory of Bob is when he came up to Cedar City to visit. This particular visit we all decided To play a game of Monopoly. The game would last two full days. Towards the end, Bob and I decided to join forces because he owned hotels on the cheapest properties and I owned hotels on the second cheapest properties. From that point forward, Adam and my Grandpa Dennis landed on our properties every single time they came around the board, and each time we collected the rent money Bob would turn to me and say, "How's the ghetto?!!" We ended up cleaning house! For the next 8 years, every time I saw Bob he always made sure to say "How's it going in the ghetto?" And every time he asked, it brought a smile to my face. Only Bob would remember something so simple and turn it into something I'll always remember. Thank you for all the memories, you will be dearly missed. 

I have told the story you are about to read to hundreds of strangers throughout my life.
In June 1963, I was a 16-year old teenager who moved to Las Vegas from the swamps of Florida to live with my dad and his wife.  I thought in those days that I was a hot-shot artist and Michael Angelo should move over and make room for me.
My first job (ever) in my young life in Vegas was to 'insert' the daily newspaper for the Las Vegas Sun (meaning, placing section C of the daily printing into the section B, then those two sections combined would be inserted into section A, which would be the front page section of the daily news...Bob can probably make that more clearer to you than I can.  
The Las Vegas Sun burned down the night before John Kennedy was assassinated...meaning they missed reporting the biggest news of the century. The daily edition was being printed somewhere in California, then flown into Las Vegas before daylight each day so the small edition could be delivered to their subscribers.  I was out of work as an inserter when the Sun burned down, but I was maintaining two paperboy routes for the Sun...still, the inserting positions had been eliminated.  
The LV Sun finally (temporarily) re-constructed on their original grounds in order to re-establish their daily edition printing.  As a result, the newspaper needed their inserters to return to compile their daily editions. 
When I returned to my inserter position, a new face appeared as a new member and part of the inserting team....his name was Bob Petersen.  He was called the 'old-timer' because he was probably 22-23 years old....we were all in our mid-teens at the time. This older guy (Bob) was not outspoken....sorta quiet and to himself.....a much more mature individual than we were.
One Saturday morning in 1964, I decided to present my artwork to the Sun after I finished my shift of inserting.  I brought along my portrait of JFK (seen below) that I had drawn as a project at my high school in Florida.  I planned to pitch myself as an artist for the Sun and maybe to get hired by the publishing department.  So I went to work on a Saturday morning, inserting sections (comic, commercial & announcements of the newspaper) for their Sunday edition...with my JFK portrait in hand.  I had leaned the portrait against the wall directly behind me while I worked.  This new guy Bob Petersen was working across the table directly in front of me.  Later he asked, "Did you draw that Kennedy?".  I told him that I did.  A few minutes later he stated, "Your proportions are perfect".  I began to (sarcastically) think to myself, "What would this guy know about proportions and artwork?".  I didn't respond to his remark and just kept working.  Then he said, "But, it's too flat".  I responded back, "Just who do you think you are....ridiculing my drawing?.  He responded, "I drew the exact same portrait....on your lunch break you should go take a look at it".  I told him I would do just that (thinking I could come back and ridicule his drawing).  He told me to drive to an old motel in North Las Vegas called the Broken Wheel Motel and go to his room and the door would be unlocked.  I did just that.
When I arrived at the motel and entered into the room I witnessed the most remarkable drawing my eyes had ever seen.  There on the wall was a drawing of John F. Kennedy that was so realistic and 3-dimensional that I felt as though I could reach around to the back of the drawing's head.  I was amazed at what I was looking at!  I could not believe an artist could create such vivid detail!  I studied it and was amazed at such artwork!  I returned to my car and as I was leaving the motel, I turned around and went back to the motel room to look at the drawing again.  It was simply amazing!  I was admiring the work of a master artist!
I was humbled to a level that was so humiliating that I could never-ever show (or brag about) my artwork again.  I returned to work as a whimpering little puppy.  I told Bob I had no idea that I would witness what I had just looked at (TWICE!!).  I asked him 101 questions about drawing.  He promised me he would teach me everything.  His drawing had jarred my 16-year old thinker....I could not get my mind off of it.
The Las Vegas Sun moved to it's new facility out to Highland Road and there Bob and I began to play with our drawing skills.  Between runs of the newspaper sections we would sit down and draw eyeballs, ears, noses, etc.  with Bob teaching me his techniques with a pencil.  I would go home and practice, practice and practice until I had his lessons down pat.  This went on for many, many months.  Bob and I had become buddies and even my dad met Bob and they became friends as well.
Two years later, Bob and I were on a double date with our girlfriends.  I didn't know this would be the last time I would see Bob for 25+ years.  Bob was driving the car on our date and my date and myself were in the back seat.  Bob made a statement that has rung inside me my entire adult life.  He said,"Randy, I envy you so much".  I asked why.  He said, "You are so good with your artwork".  Later in life I would realize that I had then received my diploma from the master, Bob Petersen.
I worked for many, many years as a professional artist.  Even during my military and Vietnam years, I would be plucked from duties by high-ranking officers and be appointed as their draftsman.  Once, a full-bird colonel at March Air Force Base in Riverside, California gave me a private work space as his artist and would call on me to draw portraits of retiring high-ranking officers and present the framed portraits at their retirement ceremonies.
Although I could not afford to pay him, but I feel that I owe Bob Petersen 50-cents out of every dollar I ever earned as an artist.  What a gracious human being he was.....and still is.  I cannot express enough gratitude for that 20-something year old Bob Petersen who took a 16-year old kid under his wing and unselfishly shared his talents with the kid out of his pure kindness and huge heart!

Bob-  I'll miss that raucous laughter, your jokes, and perfect Elvis hair. We have so many fun memories together.  I loved watching you raise your children over the years.  You nurtured Adam's love of baseball and then would reward him and his friends with ice cream. The pure, sweet love of children never fails to touch my heart. And remembering Angie when she would rush to me, and kiss me, and express her love for me. It will always remain in my memory of your loving family around you. This is the Lord's plan to return to Him, after caring for your loved ones.  I love you and all of your family.

Oh where do I start! 
Bob Petersen my city (dad) he loved and believed in me.  He was my number 1 fan since the age of 10! He touched so many lives throughout Las Vegas And Utah community by caring and giving back. He was a very strong man that taught me my core values and commitment to others.. there's so many memories I have with dad and my best friend Adam that I could take up a whole Sunday service talking about him. He was one of the greatest man I have ever known and all HIS teachings and blessings I will pass onto others.. I Love the Petersen family and I know we have 1 HUGE ANGEL ABOVE...

Bob was absolutely a character, a good character, whether it was talking in his Ronald Reagan voice or John Wayne's, wearing one of his distinctive DI ties, popping his teeth out or telling a humorous life experience, Bob was always upbeat and willing serve.  We will miss our friend Bob Peterson and the joy he brought to our lives.  Just thinking of him brings a smile to my face.  I think that might be what we will remember most and what Bob was best at, bringing a smile to the faces of all he come in contact with.  All our love and prayers to Carol, Angie and Adam.

When I was a 16 year old lost kid, Adam took me from Salt Lake to live with him and Bob in Vegas.  Bob took me job searching and helped me get a job at Little Ceasars pizza, which was just around the corner from his house.  I'll never forget the warmth I felt from Bob and how protective he seemed of me.  I have some great memories of Bob, but one stands out more than any other because of the impression it left upon my soul.  Adam and I used to travel in the back of Bob's pick-up truck on our way to paint Billboards, sometimes in different states.  We stayed in hotel rooms without air conditioning when it was 130 degrees during the way, and around 115 at night!  

When we were in Laughlin Nevada, painting a billboard for the Edgwater Casino, I heard some bickering going on between Adam and Bob, who were both high up on the billboard doing some painting.  I heard Bob's voice grow a little louder and Adam went silent.  For the rest of the day Adam's mind seemed to be in deep thought, and I thought "whatever Bob said to him must have struck a cord."  Adam and I weren't the most strait arrow teenagers back then.  Later Adam disclosed to me what it was that Bob said, that had had an impact on Adam.  Bob had given Adam some third degree chastening about being an example to me.  Adam said to me, "when my dad and I were up there arguing, you know what he said to me?  He pointed down at you and said 'Adam, there is something very special about that boy...'" 

I know at the moment it had had an impact on Adam, but it had a lifelong impact on me.  Those word, "there is something very special about that boy," planted within my mind a type of perspective that allowed me to believe in myself, my potential and to believe that God had a purpose for me.  It has never left me and was a large contributing element to the man I am today.  

Words are so powerful.  I will strive to see in others what Bob saw in me and I will strive to make the same impact on their lives!  Bob is a great man and most certainly here those words, if he hasn't already, "well done thou good and faithful servant; enter thou into the joy of thy Lord."

Uncle Bob was always some own who made everyone smile. He was one of my favorites. As a little girl I would get so excited knowing he was coming to visit us in Utah. He always had a smile and warmed my heart. I also worried often about him painting bill boards. I worried he would fall, it scared me to death. I will always have fond memories of his laugh and kind eyes and smile. Love you Uncle Bob, you will be sorely missed.  

I am so blessed to have had the greatest Dad. My Dad was kind and understanding and has touched so many lives and had such an impact on so many people.  I always knew how great he was but didn't know how many people felt the same way.  I was not an easy child but Dad never judged me and never gave up on me. I ran away once when I was five years old, and I ran away to the front yard of our house on Jerry Drive in Las Vegas.  I packed a suitcase, with my Barbies, blankets, jammies and sheets.   In the yard, I hung up the sheets in the tree to separate my new home from our house 20 feet behind me.  Shortly after, Dad came out and knocked on the tree.  He asked if he could come in and when I let him in, he told me how much he and my mother missed me and asked me to reconsider leaving.  I was stubborn and told him I was never going home.  He didn't yell at me or threaten to punish me; he just wanted to know what was bothering me so badly that I would take such drastic measures.  Then he wanted to help me process and consider options.  Once we talked it out, he told me I should come home so that I have some of the breakfast Mom was making.  This is such a sweet memory for me  as a Mother and Grandmother, if my child or grandchild acted as I did, I do not know if I would be able to listen, understand and work through the issue.  I might start with threatening foodbut not Dad.  It wasn't about being right or authoritative; it was about being compassionate and understanding.  That's my Dad. 
Dad loved to play.  I remember when I was young, my friends would often come over to ask if my Dad could come out and play.  Dad would walk us (all the neighborhood kids) around the block, marching in single-file and singing Disney's It's a Small World over and over again.
There are so many stories and examples of Dad's kindness and compassion, so much love.  I grew up and moved away, and I guess I thought Dad did toobut then as Dad was fading from this world and beginning his transition to Heaven, I noticed he was surrounded not just by Carol, me and my brother but by friends and family and men that were once boys in the neighborhood and my brother's friends (more kids who were impacted by having Dad in their lives) and by so many children.  My 9 year old niece MaKenna who has had a life with Dad by her side and my other nieces and nephews who I had just met, sweet little angels who knew my Dad as the same man he was when I was small.  Sweet Saria who found her permanent place in my heart when Dad passed and she grabbed me so tight, buried her head in my chest and said MY GRANDPA BOB IS THE BEST GRANDPA EVER!  I was reminded that Dad had not changed, his love and tenderness toward the children was just as strong the day he died as it was throughout my childhood.  I love you Dad and I miss you more as the hours go by.  Thank you for leaving such an amazing legacy and thank you for leaving us with my sweet step-mother Carol and her loving family.

One point of life I am thankful I have become acquainted with is, that time goes fast, minutes into hours, hours into days, days into years, and years into decades.  I know there are those who believe I have lived foolishly, for they say he cares not for wealth, but wealth to me is a secondary point in bringing one to a sense of happiness.  I consider myself to be richer than most, for I have learned the great secret of love, that is to love all men regardless and unconditionally. I have felt the joy that comes to one's heart when he feels no bitterness or distrust, or guile towards his fellows.
I have learned and know the joy of giving of oneself to those who are less fortunate than I.  There are so many who feel that happiness is wealth, but I have always been happy to be myself and to share my life with others.  Men are sometimes foolish when they equate joy with wealth. For me, let me live my life, without masks, without yearning for another gold brick in which to add to a foundation made of gold.  Rather, give me quiet moments in which to see the petal fall from a flower, to watch a seagull stretch its wings across the azure sky or play with a child at his game.  This then to me is the great secret of life: To love every man unconditionally regardless of what comes back to me  and when one is wronged to forgive completely -

Bob Petersen was my friend first, and then he became my husband and my children's father.  What a wonderfully warm, caring man he was, even throughout our challenges we vowed we would remain, friends, to never say bad words about one another and always, stay close for the sake of our children. What came out of that commitment was an unwavering bond.  We enjoyed holidays and special events as a family which included our spouses, our children, and grandchildren. He taught both Andrea and Adam to respect their mother and to love those around them, always to be compassionate and kind. What an enormous gift to give not only to our entire family but me as well. Bob never quit teaching, and he longed for us all to be more like him and ready for what glorious adventure I am sure he is witnessing. Carol, you are his perfect mate because you understand and believe in the plan. The sweet precious notes he left for you around the house are priceless and says it all.  Bob has left a huge hole in our hearts; he will be forever missed.   There just are never enough words...

where do I Start ....Bob and Adam moved next door when I was 14 .....they instantly took me in to there world ....Bob made sure I was there for family home evening.....took me to games ....he even bought me a journal so I could record my Dailey doings ....he knew when I was in trouble gave me 50$ and made sure I went home to get back on track ......he told me storeys that I pass on to my kids ...Adam Angie Tasha  And Carol....im so sorry for your loss ....I love you guys like family and if you need anything I'll always be here 

I didn't have the pleasure of meeting you, but thank you for making Tassia into the beautiful soul she is.

I never met Robert, but I see him in his daughter and his granddaughter. The compassion, the tenderness, and unabashed love for others that I hear and read in stories about him are reflected in them. 

As a small boy I knew he was different from the beginning. This man who towered over me when he'd come to visit my sister and I from Las Vegas no doubt had an exterior presence that could intimidate any soul. But any intimidation felt would quickly be replaced by an abundance of comfort once he would speak. There was just something about his voice. It was strong, but it was encompassed with love, and just from the sound of it alone, you knew he was good. He was different because he would make my sister and I happy. He was different because he would make us laugh. He was different because he was always singing, or whistling, always had a song in his heart. He would always tell us: "Keep a smile on your face and a song in your heart". The songs in his heart never stopped. And his melodies are embedded in my being. They carried him through his remarkable life that was full of service to others. 

I could write a book on what he's meant to me, but he'd be to inpatient to wait for the conclusion, and I'd probably make him late. I love you so much Dad. 


My grandfather once wrote me a letter, in which he wrote of the time he took me to the Tabernacle in SLC, and because he knew the right people, my 3 year old self had the privilege of touching the keys of the Tabernacle organ. He said that was his favorite memory which he shared with me. As I wrack my mind for memories I have of him, the only one I can think of is the last time I saw him. I had come home from wherever I had been only to see my mom's mother and step-father sitting in my kitchen, and I was annoyed. They wanted to say hello and hug me, I wanted to go hide in my room and be anti-social. The thought had gone through my head "What if this is the last time you'll ever get to see him?" I pushed it away and went on with my initial plan. When we were informed my grandfather had a few days left to live, we were going to go to Vegas on Sunday to see him, and say goodbye. He passed before we could. The chance at goodbye was gone the moment I decided my peace of mind was more important than saying hello and I love you to the man who, while not biologically my grandfather, was still one of the greatest men I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Bob, thank you for being the man who could make us all laugh with your shaking dentures and your magic tricks. The man with never ending supplies of cookies and cream ice cream, and stories of times much older than the tiny children you told them to. Thank you for marrying my grandmother, and unknowingly making it possible for my parents to meet. Thank you for helping me understand that what you prioritize and find most important in this life is what you will have and do. Up until this weekend, all 5 of my grandparents were still alive, and I've never not considered myself blessed to have known each of them for so long. I knew the day would come, because time stops for no one, but I will always wish it did. I love you, Grandpa. God be with you 'til we meet again.

Bob always brought magic and joy with him wherever he went.  Whether it was the magic tricks he loved to share with kids or the magic of his soul as he shared his love with others.  Everyone he knew always felt welcomed and loved by him.

One of our family favorite memories with Bob happened while my mom, Carol, was staying at my house to help me with my little kids. She had been there awhile when Bob called me up and said he wanted to surprise my mom with some magic, but of course he needed an assistant to help with the 'magic trick'.  Of course I agreed.  We carefully coordinated his arrival time and date.  When the magic was all prepared, he called to let me know it was time for action.  I sent mom and the kids on some errand or task.  When they came back, I told them it was time for some magic.  Of course, we all knew the magic words "Alla Peanut Butter Sandwich!!!"  After my mom and the girls yelled the magical words, I pulled away the curtain (really the blanket off the back of the couch) to reveal Bob who had just been magically transported to us from Las Vegas.  Mom was SO surprised! The magic was a success.

Bob- thank you for the great memories and love that you have added to our lives. Our lives are more full for knowing you.

I'll never forget the first time I met Bob. I was 13 years old and went on a trip from SLC to Vegas with his daughter. We walked into his shop where he greeted us wearing overalls covered in paint. I remember thinking "These Vegas people look rough!"lol But Bob was one of the most caring men I've ever met. He raised a very caring son who became one of my best friends and later my love. Bob is the grandfather of my beautiful daughter MaKenna who takes after her grandfather in many ways. The day she was born and brought to me out of the NICU where she'd spent 8 hours all I could see was this little miniature Bob. These two would have a special relationship and no doubt she inherited his artistic skills and his singing voice. There wasn't a time I can remember parting ways that he didn't pray with us and tell us he loved us. We will miss him very much. Love you Bob Petersen.

Grandpa Bob was always my sleeping buddy. Frequently when he came over I would go and read in a corner when I was younger and he would come and just enjoy my presence. During these times we would both always end up falling asleep. I miss him so much but I know I'll see him again. I love you so much Grandpa!

My favorite memories of Grandpa Bob will always be his magic tricks, and especially his special word- Alla peanut butter sandwich! When I was younger, I was convinced of the magical potency this word held. One time in particular, we were visiting in Las Vegas and Grandpa took all the grandkids home from church. When we arrived he pulled into the driveway, telling us that we could use his magic word to open the garage door. Disbelieving, we all began to shout the magic word at the garage door. "Alla peanut butter sandwich!" Nothing happened. None of us noticed as my mother dashed around the house, using the back door to head inside. Grandpa insisted that we just had to shout it louder, so we did- "Alla peanut butter sandwich!!" -and this time the garage door opened! I considered it a miracle at the time, jumping and grinning with delight. Looking back on this memory, and others like it, I now consider the word magical for a completely different reason. Grandpa Bob was a loving man, and he will be cherished.

One time when me and my cousin David were at Grandpa Bob's house, we got their toy tent out and played in the living room with it. We were playing a camping game too! Grandpa Bob, Grandma Carol, my sister, and my Dad were watching us play, while sitting on the couch. A few minutes later, Grandpa Bob started roaring, and pretending to be a bear!! He was crawling on his two legs, and sticking his head through the door! As he roared and clawed his way through the tent he was so big that the tent lifted off the floor and my cousin and I quickly escaped by going under the tent. We both went to go sit on the couch, and then Grandpa Bob got back up and sat back down, and he was still growling at us just to be funny. The best part is that my Dad got a video of the whole thing! Grandpa Bob was a good man, and I can NEVER forget that!!! I loved him so much, and he will ALWAYS be in my heart forever! 

I thought I would get away with my favorite memory of Bob, but so many others came to mind. 

Bob was one of the special 4 who remained with me for a long time the day my husband passed away until the coroners office came. He was so patient. 

He also was a huge supporter of my son, William, in scouting and supported him into receiving his eagle rank. What a kind spoken man he was, motivating the world around him in a kind yet comical way when it was needed. 

My first memory however, is with his artistic talent. He touched my heart spiritually through the gift he had for creating masterpieces of art. I will miss his friendly handshake as I enter the chapel on Sundays. Bob left the world a better place.

I have always called "Bob" Dad. I loved being around him anytime, whether he was working at Magic Brush Signs, chillin at the house or  going to church. It was a joy to be around him. We would often put on old western movies with the volume all the way down, and Adam and Dad would fill in the words for the actors in the movie, like a voice-over. He was so funny.  There was always a peace about him, felt like I was next to an Angel of God. All worries would go right out the window. I've known Dad for about 27 yrs. and in that time, I've learned so much from him. He probably didn't think I was listening sometimes, but I listened to every word he spoke. I can't say enough about him to explain how great of a Heavenly Spirit he is. He touched so many lives. You are already so missed Dad, but I know you will always be guiding us with your spirit. Love you so very much. 

Bob was one of the first people I met when I joined the church as a youth. He and Carol made me feel more like family than just another new member. Every Sunday, for years, when he'd first see me he'd sing, "Tell Laura I Love Her". I have lived away from Las Vegas for the last 7 years and each Sunday, once sacrament ends and I take my kids to their classes, I still think about him smiling and singing "Tell Laura I Love Her". There are those special people that we are blessed to meet throughout life that make us better just for having known them. Bob was one of those people. My husband and I are both so grateful for the opportunity to know him.

I would not be who I am today if I didn't have my Grandpa. He taught me so much about kindness, love, faith, the importance of family ...and that what couldn't be fixed with an "Alla-Peanut-Butter-Sandwich" could be fixed with the peace found only in prayer.
I cherish the memories of sitting in his shop with him, watching him paint. Those days are what made me want to be an artist like him.
I'll never forget how often he would pick me up from day camps and volunteer work, and he'd see whatever teenage boy had their eye on me (I was 12) and he would challenge them to a game of pool. Of course, he'd ALWAYS win and they'd be too embarrassed to ever talk to me again. I'm certain that was his plan!
I'll miss laughing with him.
I'll miss laughing at his constant inability to call me by my name on the first try. I got so used to answering to "Angie" around him. Probably almost as much as my mom got used to answering to "Son-Hun" ...
This is the hardest loss I have ever gone through. Grandpa was my hero in many ways, and my heart breaks to the very depths of my soul knowing I'm living in a world without his laughter and singing.

Before I met Bob I was a single mother for more than 5 years an five years, raising six children between 6 and 14 years old on my own.
 
February 1981, I drove to Las Vegas with a group of ladies to our first Single Adult Conference.  With limited preparation time, I packed clothes that were only white and red, which caught the Valley Single Chairman's eye, Bob Petersen. He approached me, introduced himself, and that was the beginning of a life-long love. That weekend started a sequence of events that would intertwine us eternally.
 
The more I got to know Bob the more I became intrigued with his life, which was so opposite of my own.  After dating for 1  years, Bob decided that he wasn't ready to take on a young family.  The relationship ended but the memories lingered like the memories of the fragrance of a rose. About 1985, he drove through Payson (where I lived) and tried to contact me. However, I was at BYU earning an Elementary Education Degree and we missed each other. A few years later I married another man, where I learned a lot about life's challenges, and ended up divorced for the second time.
February 14, 1992, the anniversary of our first meeting. Bob was drawn to an Entrepreneur Magazine where he found an ad for Positive Way, by our mutual friend Karen Strong.  After getting my contact information from Karen, he called me at my home in Payson, Utah. As we spoke, it was as if no time had passed between us.  We made arrangements to meet at my daughter's apartment in St George where he would keep his promise and take me on a date to the temple in April.  
This would be our first meeting after 10 years. I remembered how Bob loved to write in his journal, and thought how I could give him something to write. Would he still love me if I was old and haggard?  I thought of a great idea on how to make myself look very old by adjusting my makeup with hues of blue and purple, a pillow stuffed in an old pair of nylons, a baggy navy colored dress, my hair in pin curls dusted with white flour combined to age and hide my natural features. Pennie, my daughter, and I arrived at Dawnettas apartment in St George where she hardly recognized me.  Bob soon arrived and after a short visit, he walked to his gray Lincoln to get his suit; but was overcome with doubt about taking this old lady to the temple, and decided to return to Las Vegas.  Then the spirit whispered, You promised you would take her to the temple.  Yes, but she's ugly.  But you promised!  Do I have to?   You promised!  Bob submitted his will to the spirit and returned to the apartment to change his clothes.  Meanwhile, I brushed my hair and washed my face returning to normal.  When Bob came back inside for the big surprise, his poker face revealed no notice of any improvement; but shared that he had changed his plans and would be able to stay in St George until Sunday.   The weekend activities proved a step that would change my life eternally.  I am so thankful for the opportunity to love and serve a man who lives The Scout Oath, and keeps his Eternal Covenants.   
 
A SHORT ENGAGEMENT 
May 1992 we were engaged.   I wrote a letter to the 1st Presidency requesting a Cancellation of Sealing from my 1st spouse.  My bishop told me that the brethren do not meet in the summer to process these requests.  To all of our surprises, the cancellation letter arrived in July.  We were overjoyed and Bob took it as a confirmation that it was good for him to marry me in the Lord's house for all time and eternity.
We were married in the Las Vegas Temple on Sept 5, 1992.  Our eternal covenants have given us strength to choose the path of happiness. Adam and Pennie were the only 2 kids living with us at that time. Bob continued to expand his business with Billboards America.  I was called to teach Seminary.  Life was beautiful.

AN ALMOST FATAL ACCIDENT   
April 1996, 3 pm, Bob called me to tell me that he loved me. He said he would finish painting  the Swap Meet billboard on North Las Vegas Blvd in about 30 minutes; come home eat dinner,  then hurry back to finish painting the fence for the Mirage.  Instead of seeing Bob in 30 minutes, I received a phone call from the UMC Trauma Center, Mr Petersen has arrived by ambulance, we are informing you as his  next-of-kin.  I called the hospital back to make sure that it wasn't a prank call.  When I arrived in the emergency room, the Priesthood Brethren had already given him a Priesthood blessing. I told Bob, You are not going to die, God isn't finished with you yet.   The next day he was released from the hospital.  But 24 hours later he was readmitted. The emergency staff found different injuries than the Trauma Center doctors found the previous day. They discovered that he had a fractured skull, a bruised brain, broken clavicle, punctured lung, and fractured ribs. They induced a comma, inserted a feeding tube, and a ventilator in his throat. A few days after he was able to talk again, he would tell visitors, If you don't have a cherry coke for me, then you can leave. Soon there began to be other complications that would require brain surgery.  Family and friends began a fast petitioning the Lord for him to be restored to wellness. The doctors were amazed that the swelling and bleeding on his brain had reversed itself, and no surgery would be necessary.  After he got out of  ICU, Bob began to get out of bed in the middle of the night, and kneel in prayer as he petitioned the Lord in mighty prayer. On the 16th day the doctor said, Mr. Petersen I don't know what you are doing, but you keep doing it.  Your body and mind are nearly normal. You are being released today from the hospital and you do NOT even qualify for outpatient therapy.  You have received a great miracle in your life. 
Bob regained his health, painted a few more billboards, but technology was quickly changing the billboard industry. He gave all of his painting tools away and decided to work for a former employee creating flex-faces for billboard.  His painting days were over. Bob missed his paints and having his own business.  But it was time for a change. Adam, his son, trained him at Bulwark Pest Control where he became the top phone-salesman.
Bob's love of service was his life's theme. He loved make other people happy, visit the sick and the elderly while constantly being involved in missionary work.  We loved serving a full-time mission for 7 years at the Family Search Library (www.lvfamilysearchlibrary.org ) on 9th and Clark in Las Vegas, NV. The most fulfilling to his soul was serving in various capacities weekly in the Las Vegas Temple from 6 February 2002 to 4 May 2017.  Oh, how he loved to honor the Lord and keep all of His commandments.

It has been 7 days since Bob passed through the veil to return Home.  I got home 2 days ago after helping Mom to take care of him for his last few weeks.  He went much quicker than we expected.  I sit tonight trying to get a grip on the reality that he is gone.  I started looking at his pictures about 10pm and by 10:30 I was sobbing uncontrollably.  I think being in crisis mode for the past few weeks has held me together but now my heart is trying to play catch up with my head.  As I looked through the pictures I remembered all his silly games.  He was always playing with the children, and for that I adore him. He was just like a kid that never really grew up. There are some things I wish I could tell him, so I'll write him a letter.  
 
Dear Bob, a.k.a. Grampa,
I hope what Mom says is really true and that the angels (you in this case) really do get to read my journal.  Now that it's quiet and life has slowed down my heart is trying to play catch up with everything that has happened this past few weeks.  We thought we had time to help you.  We tried everything we could but we were too late.  It was not to be for it was time for you to return Home.  As I look through your pictures I realize that I only knew part of the man you really are.  I love listening to Angie and Adam tell your stories.  Storytelling is a gift I treasure in you and love that you have passed it on to your children.  
 
A few days ago when I looked through my pictures to find ones of you, I realized I think I took you for granted most of the time.  I didn't appreciate your gift of joy.  You were there most of the time, content to sit in the background.  You were the one behind the camera at the ice cream shop.  You were taking naps I mean, meditating on the porch when you weren't counting the birds on the wire.  You walked me down the aisle when Joshua and I got married.  You were there soon after every baby I had. You were there, but I don't think I appreciated you.  I'm sorry!  I don't even think I have a picture with you.  I will miss the buzzy-bee game you used to play with my babies, and the hand-waving game you played with Bella.  I will miss the hug you insisted on every time you came for Family Home Afternoon.  I will miss you napping on the couch in the corner.  I will miss your stories and even the jokes I heard a hundred times.  You know, I tried to retell one and messed it up.  No one can tell jokes like Grampa!
 
I told you once that you have impacted my life and I feel closer to you than my own father.  I respect my father and I understand his limitations.  But you have made a bigger difference in my life.  So many blessings you gave me still echo in my heart:  Read your scriptures and then there will be a well of water in you springing up unto everlasting life....  I remember when I was on my search for what is true -- searching everywhere other than the scriptures, and you brought me back.  You said something like Remember the scriptures contain all truth.  It was like a revelation to my mind- something new I had never heard before.  Looking back I can see so many crossroad moments in my life that you were there to point me toward the Lord.  Sometimes I forgot the truth and lost my way but you were constant.   
 
As I look in all your pictures I see that it wasn't just me that you were there for.  You were there for all your kids and grand-kids.  You always smiled brighter when you were holding a grand-baby.  You took the time to get on the floor and play with the kids not  just my kids but all the grand-kids.  It was like that was the most important thing on your list for the day:  play with grand-kids!  Oh, how I hope to be like you someday!
 
You have set an amazing example of service and love for all your posterity to follow.  You simply were not happy unless you were serving.  You left some mighty big shoes to fill.  You wore out your life (and your shoes) in the service of others.  You fought the good fight. You finished the race!  Well done!!  
 
We will miss you terribly but will hold on to the hope of when we will meet again.  I love you Dad!

Bob is a beautiful example in loving others and to always be ready to go where the Holy Ghost led him or when Heavenly Father calls upon us.   I'm sorry for your loss, but grateful to have known him.

Uncle Bob is my favorite uncle, he always made us laugh and shared fun entertaining stories about growing up.  As a little girl I remember he would come visit us out in Clarkston. Bob and Adam would pull up in his white cadillac toting a bag of gingersnaps that he would share with us, then let us drive around in his car with our heads poking out of the sunroof. I always felt love and cared about from our visits.  Later we eagerly awaited visits from Bob and Carol and enjoyed visiting and laughing with them.  Periodically I would get a mystery phone call from church headquarters that my husband needed to talk to President Hinckley--after a moment of confusion and terror, a realization my uncle was pulling my leg.  I pranked-called Bob once with my Chinese accent and he was equally terrified and impressed by his long lost Chinese daughter.  My husband and children enjoyed visiting with Uncle Bob one summer driving through Vegas.  We loved looking through his scrapbooks of art work, his billboards he had painted and other beautiful art he had created.  He made us laugh and we felt the spirit strong as he shared his faith and testimony of the Savior. My daughter Elisabeth had a notebook of cartoon characters she had drawn and Bob encouraged and inspired her to continue doing art work as well as my other children. I love you Uncle Bob thank you for all the joy and beauty you brought into my life.  Love Your Niece.
