ROBERT LOUIS CARTER, SR. better known as Bob, was born on March 7, 1936, in Roanoke Rapids, NC. He was raised by his parents William and Rachel (Carter) Barnes. Robert was affectionately known as Moochie, Bob, Papa C and to many, Deacon Carter.
Bob gave his life to Jesus Christ at the tender age of 13 and was baptized in the Atlantic Ocean (Coney Island, NY). He joined Mount Zion Baptist Church in Brooklyn, NY and began cultivating a relationship with his Lord and Savior.
At 17 years old, Bob enlisted in the United States Air Force and began a marvelous career. He was dedicated to his country and served three tours in the Republic of South Vietnam. Bob received several medals: Joint Service Commendation AF Good Conduct, Humanitarian Service, National Defense Service, Vietnam Service, and a host of other awards and commendations. After serving his country for thirty honorable years, he retired as a Chief Master Sergeant.
Bob loved sports and traveling. He spent his retirement officiating softball, baseball, basketball, and soccer games. He was the proud owner and CEO of Nevada Sports Officials Association. He was elected to the Amateur Softball Hall of Fame in Oklahoma and earned the title of Nevada State Baseball Official of the year. In 2006, he was honored as Nevada Businessman of the year. When he was not officiating games, he was traveling the world. His exploration took him to the Far East, Australia, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Europe, China, Canada, Mexico, Central America, and South America.
Bob was a servant at heart. In 1989, he joined Unity Baptist Church, Las Vegas, NV where he became a trustee and facility manager. He was ordained as a Deacon in 1999. In 2002, he became one of the founders of Progressive Pilgrims Fellowship Baptist Church where he served on the choir, in the Samaritan’s House and Three-Square Food Bank ministries. Feeding the poor was important to him.
Deacon Carter loved laughing, eating, and having fun with his family. Every June, the family celebrated Father’s Day fishing at Panguitch Lake in Utah. Deacon Carter enjoyed preparing and serving family and friends dinner every Wednesday and Sunday. Many of you joined us for those dinners. His favorite pastime was spent enjoying the evenings with his life-long friends Jesi and Ida Chaission (adopted sister and travel companion), and T.C. Freeman. Every evening, they would eat dinner, watch game shows, cowboy, and comedy movies, and most importantly, virtually officiating sports with the rest of the Chaission family. Old habits never die. Bob was blessed to live a fulfilled life!
Deacon Carter was preceded in death by both of his parents, brother Billy, sister Joyce (JoJo), and son Steven. He leaves to cherish his loving memory the Matriarch of our family, Aunt Langer, his children, Roxanne G. McNair (Donald), Monique Y. Young (Papa Joe), Carolyn J. Chapple (Anthony), Audrey G. Carter, Robert L. Carter Jr. (Silla), Vickie Carter Cole (Jeffery) and Tynisa L. Carter; sisters, Vicki Morgan (Ronald), Gail Barnes (Alecia), and Rochelle Burse-Barnes; 22 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, God-son Isaiah Chaission; and a host of other family and friends.
Deacon Carter fought the good fight, he finished the race, he kept the faith, and now, he can receive his crown of righteousness.
