Richard Albert Montgomery, born March 12, 1938, to Fay E. and Louis C. Montgomery, passed away at home in hospice on April 27, 2024, after a brief battle with stage IV lung cancer. Richard managed to pack many experiences into his 86 years.
After graduating from Alameda High School and trying his hand at Letters and Science at the University of California, he enlisted in the US Army, for which he received an honorable discharge after 2 years of service. Richard went on to work in various data processing, computer operator, and management positions for prestigious establishments including but not limited to Douglas Aircraft, the University of California at Berkeley, Shell Oil, Stanford University, Amdahl Corporation, Atari, and Integrated Solutions Inc. In a sharp turn from his established working skill set, Richard spent his last few decades of gainful employment prior to retirement doing something he loved - working with animals - at a pet boarding, grooming, and training facility with his former wife.
After retiring, he moved to Winlock Washington before ultimately deciding to move to Las Vegas Nevada, where he enjoyed the company of his son Sean, daughter-in-law Jeanne, ex-wife Bobbi, and his granddaughter Brynn, whom he adored with all his heart. Over the last several years Richard settled into a relaxed routine, enjoying the simple things: a good cup of coffee coupled with equally good conversation. Shopping trips to Savers or the Salvation Army. He was always on the hunt for items that needed a little TLC, which he was eager to provide in his garage workshop. Once completed, many pieces found their way into his home, and sometimes, he would simply return the refurbished item to the charity's storefront to await purchase by someone in need.
Breakfast, anywhere anytime! His cat Blackie, whom he single-handedly, with lots of love and patience, turned from a true scaredy cat into a lovable weirdo. Trying his luck at the slots (and winning more often than not!). And of course, being the cutest Grampy ever. Richard will be greatly missed and will always hold a special place in our hearts. He leaves behind his son Sean, daughter Erin, granddaughter Brynn, nephew Howard, and former stepchildren/grandchildren Terry, Wendy, and Kimberly. As per Richard's preference, there will be no service.
To close in Richard's own words: "I had an amazing life. Every day is an adventure. Be kind."
