Raymond Edwin Records (Ray) passed away on October 28, 2016 due to congestive heart failure. He had been on the Hospice service at home since October 19, 2016. He was born on May 30, 1930 in Fort Morgan, Colorado to George H. Records and Sarah B. (Louden) Records. The family moved to Denver, Colorado in the early 1940s. Ray earned his general aviation pilot’s license when he was 16 and taught flying lessons and ferried small airplanes around the country out of Sky Ranch Airport in east Denver. He earned his B.S. at the University of Denver in 1956 and his Doctor of Medicine degree from Saint Louis University in 1961. Ray and a partner each purchased a Piper Super Cub in the mid 1950s and Ray worked every summer doing pesticide aerial applications in eastern Colorado to cover his medical school expenses. Upon graduation from medical school, Ray initially practiced medicine at, and, was on the faculty of the University of Colorado Medical School. He completed a low vision fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida and was subsequently recruited to serve as the Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) in Omaha, Nebraska in 1970. He served in this position for nearly 20 years and was very proud of the Department’s faculty and staff for their record of teaching and service. After retiring from UNMC, Ray did locum tenens practice for a medical school classmate in Houston, Texas and later for an ophthalmologist in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the early 1990s, Ray purchased his nostalgia airplane, a Piper Super Cub, and flew it out of the Millard, Nebraska airport and later the Boulder City, Nevada airport until the late 2000s. Ray and his second wife relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada in 2000. Ray is survived by his first wife, Marjorie Records, of Omaha, Nebraska and his second wife, Sue Schuerman, of Las Vegas, Nevada; his daughter Lisa and her husband Chet Gunhus and their three children, Leif, Cooper, and Charlotte all of Carver, Minnesota. A committal service will be scheduled in the late spring/early summer in Clatonia, Nebraska.
