While growing in Iowa, I was always impressed how Mom could do so much work around the farm and still have time to cook us such wonderful meals.  When I was a kid, I didn't always appreciate her wonderful home cooking, since it was our normal.

But once a year Mom could shine at the Fredericksburg Dairy Day baking contests.  She always entered many different baked goods, from pies and cakes to bread and rolls.  And she would win blue ribbons on almost everything.

The blue ribbons came with a small cash prize that paid for Mom's gambling at the Lion's Club bingo games years before she moved to Las Vegas. I still remember her sitting there playing bingo with hard kernels of corn used to mark the bingo cards while I would come  by periodically to pester her for another quarter to ride the Ferris wheel, or when I felt daring, the tilt-o-whirl.

For decades afterwards, I could always count on Mom's homemade rolls with dinner and bubble ring for breakfast to mark the family being together again.

I'll miss her always, but am comforted by the thought of her being with Charlie once again.  And wondering if Heaven has a kitchen  for Mom to make her bubble ring.
