Nicky followed in his siblings’ footsteps studying at St. Anne’s Catholic School and graduating from Bishop Gorman High School in 1982, where he was the student manager of the 1979 state champion football team. He continued his studies at Dixie State College earning his associate degree, and attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and Cal State Northridge focusing on geology.
A loving grandson, in 1985, he moved in with his 89 year-old grandmother in La Canada, CA where he was blessed to spend years enjoying her home cooked meals and making memories with his extended Croatian family.
Nicky was a scout and shared his love of the outdoors with everyone he met. Always studying maps, he had directional awareness. If you were with him, you were never lost. Hiking national parks and taking road trips were always educational and fun with Nicky because he would astound us with the names of natural landmarks. Nicky was an instinctual explorer, discovering something new everywhere he went.
Nicky was a true rocker. He received his first drum set one Christmas in the 70s and formed a band with his high school buddies. He mastered all the drum solos of all his favorite rock bands and at concerts he always found a way to get a seat up front.
Nicky was a dog whisperer and treated dogs as man’s best friend. He leaves behind his faithful companion, Friction.
Nicky was preceded in death by his father, Robert W. Barnett Sr., and his brother, Robert W. Barnett Jr. He is survived by his beloved son, Nicholas W. Barnett, dear mother, Mary Lamat Barnett Brandin, sister Helen Carlson (Glenn), sister Elizabeth Majich (Paul). He was Uncle Nicky to his treasured nieces and nephews: Erin Schafer (Todd), Sean Robinson (Alexis), Roxanne Majich, Marilyn Majich, Rachel Majich, Natalie Majich and his great nieces and nephews: Austin Schafer, Mackenzie Schafer, Bronx Robinson and Baylor Robinson.
A Catholic mass will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2024, 1 PM at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, 1901 S. Maryland Parkway, Las Vegas, NV 89104, where he received all his sacraments. The rosary will be held before mass at 12:30 PM. He will be laid to rest at Palm Mortuary, Main Street.
