Melvin Walker Braxton, 76, of Henderson, Nevada, departed this life on Saturday, October 1, 2022. He was born on March 6, 1946, in Richmond, Virginia, and was raised in Bronx, New York. Melvin was a Champion of Life. He loved his family dearly. His positive outlook on life influenced many. He loved people and always focused on making a difference.
Melvin began his career in public service as an enlisted member of the United States Navy. He proudly served as a Police Officer with the New York City Police Department and retired after twenty years. His initial retirement allowed Melvin to pursue and retire from a second career. He was an educator with the New York City Public Schools District and the Clark County School District. He quickly advanced his career to become an assistant principal. His service also extended to his faith community, where he was a trustee with the Victory Missionary Baptist Church in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Melvin’s love of learning was evident as he obtained a Bachelor’s degree from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and two Master’s Degrees from the City University of New York. He encouraged others to reach their full potential in all aspects of life, and his influence is apparent. He was also athletic. His favorite activities were bicycling, yoga, running, skiing, and hiking.
Melvin is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lillian Patricia (Davis), BA; his children Tricia Braxton Perry, DPP, Tamara (Braxton) Watson, MA, and Robin Douglas; sisters, Marveleen (Brenda Braxton) Durosinmi, PhD., Marilyn (Braxton) Beale, BA, Millicent Braxton, PhD, Margo Braxton, BA; brother Maurice Braxton, their respective spouses; his beautiful grandchildren, Jenna, Jillian, and Joey, and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews. Melvin is preceded in death by his parents, Manuel and Ruth (Walker) Braxton, and his brothers, Manuel, Jr., Matthews, Michael, and Mitchell.
A Celebration of Life tribute was scheduled for 12 PM on October 9, 2022, at Palm Mortuary in Las Vegas, Nevada.
