Matthew was born in Fort Worth Texas on December 4, 1967. He enlisted in the United States Army when he was 17 and served his country for 10 years. He bravely fought in both the Gulf War and Operation Desert Storm. Matthew took great pride in his military service and was especially proud of his time as an Ammunition Specialist on Black Hawk helicopters and as an Aircraft Arms Missile Specialist. During his military career, Matthew had the opportunity to travel the world. His favorite countries included Amsterdam, Germany, and the Swiss Alps. He went on to join the IATSE Local 720 where he has spent the last 20 years as a proud union member. He began his career with IATSE as a stagehand and went on to serve as a Steward and most recently as a Business Agent.
If you asked Matthew what his greatest accomplishment in life was, he would have told you it was his family. He met the love of his life, Jennifer, in December of 2002. That love grew to include her three children Frances-Lyn, Brett and Sabrina. The two married on April 11, 2008 and later welcomed sons, Samuel and Jacob.
Matthew was a devoted father, grandfather and uncle. He enjoyed taking his boys and nephews to school each morning. He would even park further away than necessary so that he could spend more time with them. During family gatherings he could always be found holding a grandbaby and checking on all of the kids. In his spare time, Matthew enjoyed listening to music and playing his bass guitars.
Matthew is survived by his wife, Jennifer; his children, Frances Lyn, Brett, Sabrina, Samuel and Jacob; his grandchildren, Ava-Lyn, Kenadie-Lyn, Joseph, and Penelope; his mother and stepfather, Katherine and Brian Johnson; brother, Adam Sloan; and sister, Echo Gregory. He is predeceased by his father, Joe Gum.
A celebration of life for Matthew will be held Tuesday, August 15, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Palm Northwest Mortuary, 6701 North Jones Blvd, Las Vegas, Nevada 89131.
