Mary Lou Campbell, 87, beloved wife and mother and long-time resident of Las Vegas/Henderson, Nevada, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, May 9, 2021. She was born August 2, 1933 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Robert J. and Mary Kay Payette.
Mary Lou attended East Grand Rapids High School and Michigan State University where she joined the swim team. There she met her husband, John K. Campbell, also of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Together they had eight children and raised them in Grand Rapids, Michigan; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Corte Madera and Larkspur, California; and finally settled in the Las Vegas Valley in 1972.
She was a devout Catholic and volunteered much of her time to the church. She served on the hospitality committee with her husband at St. Thomas More in Henderson, Nevada. When her children were younger she coached the girl’s basketball and volleyball teams at St. Patrick’s Parish in Larkspur, California. Raising her children gave her much joy and fulfillment. She loved to golf and was a member of the Legacy Golf Course in Henderson. She also enjoyed swimming, gardening, crafts, including painting and sewing, and spending time with family and friends.
Mary Lou is survived by her husband of 68 years, John (Jack) Campbell; seven of her eight children: Nancy (Tom) Brooks, John, Mary Kay (Michael) Cook, Jane (John) Camburn, Pete (Ann Hipskind of Grand Rapids, Michigan), David (Danee) and Jim; daughter-in-law Brenda; her brother Tom (Ginny) Payette; fourteen grandchildren Sarah, Tommy, Matthew, Michael, James, Mary Frances, Geoffrey, Christopher, Patrick, Michael, Katie, Peter, Christopher and Lew; and two great-grandchildren Mackenzie and William. She is preceded in death by her parents; her brothers Bob and Pete; her sister Nancy; her son Rob; and great-grandson Gavin.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2021 at 10:00am at St. Thomas More Catholic Community, 130 N. Pecos Rd., Henderson, Nevada 89074 with burial services immediately following at Palm Eastern Mortuary and Cemetery, 7600 S. Eastern Ave., Las Vegas, Nevada 89123.
In lieu of flowers, her family is requesting that donations be made to Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, Administrative Offices, 1501 Las Vegas Blvd N., Las Vegas, NV 89101.
