Dr. Marshall C. Darnell

Dr. Marshall C. Darnell, of Las Vegas, passed away Aug. 21, 2014. He was born Nov. 15, 1937, in Harrodsburg, Ky., to James and Elizabeth Darnell. He is a graduate of Campbellsville College (AA), Eastern Kentucky University (BA and MA) and University of Nevada, Las Vegas (Ed. D). He became a substitute teacher at Rancho High School in January 1961, and remained with the Clark County School District until his retirement. During this time, he was a teacher, counselor, assistant principal, principal at K.O. Knudson and Valley High School, and central district administrator. During his time in central administration, he held positions as assistant director of secondary education, director of curriculum, director of vocational education and other positions. He was assistant superintendent when he retired in 1990. After his retirement, he worked as a consultant to the district for three years. He taught classes at Nova University, National University and University of Nevada, Las Vegas. One of his most appreciated honors was having a school named for him in 2001. He was a member of the Shadow Hills Baptist Church. He was involved in numerous community organizations including Southwest Rotary, where he served in several positions including club president and leading a Group Study Exchange to the Philippines in 1998. Since he has retired, he has been active in the Spanish Oaks Homeowners Association, where he had served on the board of directors and as president of the board. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Theora Harrison; and a brother, J.C. Darnell. He is survived by his wife, of 50 years, Patsy. He is also survived by a daughter, Therese Michele Darnell; a son, James Marshall Darnell (and wife, Shannon); two grandchildren, Elizabeth Paul and Evan Darnell; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 2-6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, both at Palm Mortuary, 6701 N. Jones Blvd., Las Vegas. It is the families wish that, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dr. Marshall C. Darnell Elementary School, 9480 W. Tropical Parkway, Las Vegas, NV 89149.
