Nanay Maria and Tatay Vivencio were both born in BRGY Sugcong, Urdaneta City, Pangasinan, Philippines. Nanay was born on Nov. 12, 1928 (but when she arrived in America her birthdate was changed to 12/10/1928), and Tatay was born on 01/13/1926. They met during WWII when they were going to the same high school. Nanay was very athletic; playing softball and volleyball and Tatay was one of her coaches. They didn’t know it, but they were third cousins. They got married on December 29, 1947.
They were blessed with 15 children, 10 girls and 5 boys. The last two were twins and the only ones born in a hospital. Nanay would stay at home while Tatay was working. He graduated college to become a teacher, but that wasn’t his forte. He continued in college and graduated with a BS in Philosophy. He ultimately became a Senior Clerk for the Court of Appeals. Nanay didn’t stay idle just raising children. She would buy and sell some goods. She would also buy raw materials for blankets and mosquito nets, sew them and sell them. She cooked camote que and candies and sell them to the kids passing by after school. They made sacrifices, but their strong faith and devotion for each other and faith in our Almighty God provided a strong bond to each other. So strong that after over 76 years of marriage they died 3 days apart. They couldn’t live without each other.
They were in the Holy Name Society, Tatay was in several ministries in the Catholic Church. Nanay was the treasurer in their Catholic Church and would prepare foods for the kids, help the 1st Communicants, distribute goods that were donated to the community.
The family moved between Manila and Pangasinan, trying to stay together. In 1982 Nanay immigrated to the United States, being petitioned by one of her sons who was in the US Navy. Tatay followed in 1985 after retiring from the Court of Appeals. Nanay worked in food service in hospitals and ultimately worked at a hospital for the State of California. Tatay worked at a hospital also, cleaning surgical instruments. Nanay was able to petition several of her children and nine of them arrived in 1989. They lived a good life until medical problems started to take over their life three years ago. They continued to be prayerful and thanking God for all the graces that were bestowed on the whole family.
They were survived by 14 children, 41 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren.
