In Loving Memory of Manual Luna M.D. March 9, 1933- September 30, 2022 Manuel Luna was born in San Francisco March 3, 1933 to the parents of Miguel and Pacing Luna who emigrated from the Philippine Islands in the late 1920's.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Suzanne, his five children: Melanie (Joseph) Vickroy, Michael (Sue), Summer (Arthur Washington), Leland (Christine), Dennis (Laura). He has 5 grandchildren Kevin (Sofi), Jessica Beard, Zachary Waterfire, Misha and Kiona Vickroy. and his great grandson Henry Luna. His extended grandchildren Brent (Victoria) Carnes, Kady Weatheford, Alexander (Sarah) Weatherford, Sarah (Gregory) Oranges. The first son of Miguel and Pacing Luna, his father was a humble and hardworking barber in San Francisco. He has two other siblings' brother Carlos and Sister Elena. Manuel Luna graduated from Lowell High School, San Francisco. Attended the City College of San Francisco, Graduated UC Berkeley with a BS in Biochemistry, He earned his Medical Degree from Creighton University in Omaha Nebraska. He completed his internship and residency in the San Francisco Bay Area He met his future wife, Suzanne Avizado from Salinas, California while attending City College San Franciso. Manuel and Suzanne were married in 1955. While attending medical school they gave birth to their first daughter, Melanie followed by her siblings, Michael and Summer. They gave birth to sons Leland and Dennis during and after the completion of his medical residency. He set up is Family Medicine practice in South San Francisco. Manuel and Suzanne raised their children on the San Francisco peninsula. They first lived in San Bruno, they bought their first house in South San Francisco, next they moved to Millbrae and then
Hillsborough. Manuel and Suzanne settled into their final home in Las Vegas after his retirement.
His medical clinic was comprised of a husband and wife team at the core of the business for many years. He had medical privileges at Peninsula Hospital, Burlingame and was their employee physician for 25 years. He also held privileges at Seton Hospital Daly City. Manuel became a well-established physician in South San Francisco. He was a hardworking young physician a serious work ethic imparted by his father. He worked tirelessly waking up early and finishing late in the office. He visited his nursing home patients on the weekends. He carried the patient's chart and his black bag and made house calls to those unable to travel to his office. He was able to retire from practice in 2016 at the age of 83.
If he had time, Manuel was an avid tennis player. His tennis skills helped open the door in the tennis playing medical community and made him many friends. He had multiple tennis club memberships in Burlingame, San Mateo and Redwood City. He would travel to tennis tournaments in Texas, Palm Springs and throughout California, playing singles and teaming up with his wife Suzanne as a mixed doubles team. He completed the San Francisco marathon twice, ran numerous 10 K runs, participated in a tag team triathlon, Played for years on a basketball team in the South San Francisco recreational league. He was a persistent jogger, he skied, played golf and bowled. He loved playing piano. He learned piano in his youth in San Francisco. When a piano was available he would play at the nursing homes. He tried his hand at playing the Organ. His biggest passion was playing poker whenever he can. Manuel and Suzanne would host Poker nights with their closest friends. His ultimate Poker adventure was entering in to World Series of Poker.
Manuel Luna was a very dedicated and loving husband, a caring father and grandfather and a good friend. He had an easy going attitude and was open minded in his personality. Dr. Luna was a hardworking physician and thoughtful to all his patients. He has made his mark on this Earth and to all those who knew him. Manuel Luna will be sorely missed.
A funeral mass for Manuel will be held Friday, October 21, 2022 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 5830 Mesa Park Dr, Las Vegas, NV 89135. Following the funeral mass will be a reception - following the funeral mass at Mastrioni's, 3330 S Hualapai Way #160, Las Vegas, NV 89117.
