On Wednesday, April 14, 2021, at the age of 81, Leonila Supnet Farinas passed away in her home in Henderson, Nevada due to complications of Alzheimer’s. Leonila was born on January 17, 1940 in the Philippines. She was the daughter of Wenceslao and Carlota Supnet. She was the oldest of four siblings...she had two sisters, Providencia and Maria Lourdes (Abo) and one brother, Ferico.
She met Cirilo Farinas, the love of her life in New York. They got married in a civil service in 1971 and had their wedding on August 26, 1972. This August would have been their 50th Anniversary. Cirilo never felt worthy of her so he spent every single day trying to be the man that she deserved. He was not only her husband, he was her life partner, soulmate and best friend. They went through life together, side by side. They rarely spent any time apart in over 50 years. Anything and everything they did, they did together.
Leonila studied nursing and received her degree from Dagupan Colleges School of Nursing in 1961. She moved to the United States and worked in Galveston, Texas and Baltimore, Maryland before settling down in Long Island, New York. She was a Level 2 Registered Nurse at Kings Park Psychiatric Hospital in New York for over 30 years. She retired from Kings Park in April of 1995.
Lee, Leony, or Leoning, as she was often referred to, was fond of traveling with her friends and family. Her and Cirilo frequently traveled to many states across the US and various countries around the world. She honeymooned in Europe and in her more recent travels, visited China, Russia, Egypt, The Philippines and Panama.
After she retired, one of her favorite pastimes was bowling. She loved that it was something that her and her husband could enjoy together. They were members of a bowling league at South Point Casino Hotel here in Las Vegas. She also belonged to a bowling league in Stony Brook back in New York. Her and Cirilo enjoyed dancing so much. They attended many gatherings and events and spent countless hours dancing the night away. Cirilo knew so many styles of dancing and was able to teach them to her. They could dance, Salsa, The Tango, The Waltz, Rumba, The Cha-Cha, even Rock-n-roll and the Jive.
Leonila was an extremely creative and crafty person. She sewed clothes, anything from dresses to pants, blouses and skirts. She even sewed curtains and pillowcases. She also knitted, crocheted, painted figurines and made dolls. There was really nothing she couldn’t do. Another love of hers was flowers. She loved everything plants and flowers. She spent a lot of her time gardening. She loved looking at flowers, taking pictures of flowers and took such pride growing her garden and perfecting the landscaping at her homes. Other things she enjoyed were watching American and Filipino soap operas and
musicals. She listened to musicians like Billy Joel, Barry Manilow, Diana Ross, and Bette Midler.
Most importantly, she loved spending as much time as she could with her husband, her children, her grandchildren, and all of her cousins, family and friends. She was able to build such strong bonds and relationships with everyone she knew. Those bonds and relationships would last her an entire lifetime. It didn’t matter how long she knew someone, how long she was apart from someone, how far the distance between them was…she made it a point to always keep in touch, stay close and spend time with everyone important to her.
Her smile, laughter, charisma, and spirit brought positive energy and light into every situation. The lives she touched, the memories she made and the impact that she had on all of us will be cherished forever.
Leonila is survived by her husband Cirilo; son Gerald James Farinas; daughter Cheryl Lee Farinas Callorina; daughter-in-law Michelle; son-in-law Christopher; her five grandchildren Caliyah, Angelina, Cassius, Brooklynn, and Kyle; and her siblings Ferico Supnet and Maria Lourdes Diaz.
