Captain of the Family This family, our village that has helped me to grow Instilled in me how to be a good person who knows That the strength in each other could only be had Because it was built upon the morals held by you Grand Dad What makes you a great man to me is not the stock of your gold Nor some claim to fame for the rest of the world to behold It’s from your honor, wisdom, humor and gentle way And by being the hero you are each and every day You are always the calm when weather is rough The voice of reason when one of us says enough is enough A well-intentioned anchor, keeping us from falling adrift Who with one conversation can give our outlook a lift. You served your country in a manner I cannot comprehend Put all of your fears aside and your life on suspend I am filled with such pride when I think of your service at sea And the loyalty you have given to this grateful country You have been part of a crew all working together for one goal To rage against oppression and help make humanity whole. But I have come to realize, I too am part of a crew That counts on one another and helps each other through Our troop has a leader who possesses reason and calm And I would always feel safe placing my life in his palm Our family is your crew and I am proud to be in your ranks I promise to pass along your values no matter the lengths. You have always struck as the type of man As someone to come to, to formulate the best plan You are my model of courage, honor and loyalty What it means to be good and to have decency Never stop sharing all the wisdom you have amassed For we, your faithful still have so many questions to ask Look in the eyes of your crew and know that we believe That we will always look to you as Captain of the family Written with all my love by Hays Lewis for my Grandfather Leonard Klein
