Katherine Petersen Robinson

Katherine was born in Cache Valley (Richmond), Utah on October 22, 1946. She grew up on a small farm, and preferred outside chores to the inside chores, such as feeding the livestock, weeding gardens, thinning, hoeing, and topping sugar beets, shoveling manure, or driving a team of horses or the tractor during haying season. Katherine loved fishing with her older brother, Michael, doing science experiments, and looking at the stars together. Her younger sisters, Jill and Janet, four and eight years younger, respectively, played school with Katherine, or they would play in the playhouse. The sisters would present plays to their parents and brother that they had written.

Katherine excelled in school. She began playing the flute in the 7th grade, and she played through her remaining junior high school and high school years in the school band. Katherine was very involved in school, participating in student government; was the Girls League representative in 8th grade; the junior high school historian; and President of Future Homemakers of America in high school. Katherine also loved and was involved in 4-H. Roles like these continued throughout her college and graduate school years.

Katherine was always an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She met and married her former husband of thirty-three years, Huston Robinson, at Utah State in Logan, Utah, and the two were married in September of 1967. Huston’s work required the young married couple to move a lot during the first eight years of their marriage for his various construction jobs, so Katherine did not work, and volunteered a lot of her time doing genealogy. Katherine and Huston moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1975, and she called Las Vegas home until her death. Katherine and Huston were unable to have biological children, and they adopted their first child, Amber, at birth in 1980, and in 1982 adopted their second child, Ryan, at birth.

Katherine enjoyed being a stay-at-home mother, and thought of activities every day that she could do with her children. She was a supportive mother and put Amber and Ryan in several extracurricular activities each, so they could develop their own talents and interests. Katherine went to work when the children were in high school to assist with college expenses. When Amber was in college, Katherine and Huston divorced, and Katherine moved to the Peccole Ranch side of the valley. She loved her Ward and her girlfriends, and several members of the Peccole Ranch Ward.

Katherine loved various sewing crafts and art such as paper making or drawing. She would make the neighbors food gifts every year at Christmas time, and also made homemade fudge (chocolate and sour cream!) to send to her family. She loved decorating her homes, especially the home that she built with her former husband. Katherine made most meals and desserts from scratch.

Katherine was intelligent. She loved reading and learning about history and different cultures. She devoted time to her church callings over the years, and probably her favorite callings were genealogy related for her various Wards. Katherine continued working on family genealogy upon her retirement, and helped her daughter stay organized at her business by keeping the legal files in order.

Katherine died on June 25, 2024, after having Alzheimer's for years. She had a lot of physical complications, the last six months. Katherine is predeceased by her parents, Barbara and Russell Petersen, and brothers Michael and Mark Petersen. She is survived by her children, Amber and Ryan, her sisters Jill (Ron) Bliesner and Janet (Trevor) Hinesley and her sister in law Arlene Petersen, several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Services will be Saturday, August 3, 2024 at Palm Mortuary, Cheyenne in Las Vegas, Nevada at 11:00 a.m., and she will be laid to rest Saturday, August 10, 2024 at Hyde Park Cemetery in Cache Valley, Utah.
