My sister Judy was 6 years older than I was. To me she was always Judy in our family and only when she married Bill (I think) it was changed to Joyce.  We lived in Morristown, New Jersey from1936 to about 1953.  The early 50s when we moved was Judy's senior year and so she had to leave Morristown High and graduate from Barnstable High School in Hyannis Massachusetts. That was a very big change for anyone in the 12th grade.

We lived on Harbor Bluffs Rd in Hyannis and after high school she worked at the Cape Cod Times newspaper.  As I recall she walked there every day from the house to Main St., probably a mile away. It was there that in (late 50s early 60s) she came to live with the family. With her was Barbara at that time about 4 years old. Everybody loved Barbara-- my sister Maureen and my mother and father. In 1960, I was off to college and so only saw her at vacation times. Down the road nearby and on Lewis Bay in Hyannis was Bill Carey, a bachelor who at the time was driving daily to work in Boston. Bill met both of them and fell in love with Judy and  Barbara as well. They got married in Hyannis--as I recall I was at sea with the Navy and so I missed it.

They ended up moving to Marleton, New Jersey when Bill worked for RCA nearby. That is where their son Brian was born and grew up. Eventually Bill took a job in Arizona and so they moved there and my father took it extremely hard as my mom and dad did very little traveling and had never been on an airplane. (They finally did go).  The next move was to Las Vegas to be close to Barbara and eventually her husband David Johnson. 

I recall early in my life there was an Easter egg hunt at the home of Judy's best friend, Missy Zimmerman. I was 6/7 years old and could not find any of the eggs and the other kids had much better luck. I remember how Judy consoled me. Judy and my father were very close and when our mother became seriously ill for an extended period. It was a life and death situation and so Dad stayed with her in Boston and was out of the house a lot. Judy became the leader of our family. Judy looked after us as best she could in those trying times when both parents were out of the house for what seemed to be 6 months, although am sure it was much shorter. There was also an older woman who looked after us full time.

My sister will be sorely missed by all hands.

Goodbye my beloved Grandma I know God holds you as closely as you held him. I will miss you until we meet again and I hope your next life justifies this one. Thank you for always listening, thank you for never forgetting a birthday, thank you for always being excited to see me. Thank you for always believing in me even when no one else did. Your faith should be an example to all and befitting of a Marine.  God Speed Thee to Heaven.
