Joseph James 'JJ' Ash, 95, of Las Vegas, passed away peacefully from natural causes in his home on October 17, 2023. He was the youngest of seven children, born to Hikle and Elizabeth Ash on March 20, 1928 in Olean, New York. A graduate of Olean High School, he attended St. Bonaventure University, and served in the U.S. Army attaining the rank of Sergeant.
A promising career in music prompted him to reach for his dreams in Hollywood as a jazz drummer and vocalist. When car trouble en route from New York left him stranded in Las Vegas in 1960, he took a "short-term" job as a shill at the Nevada Club. However, seeing the earnings potential in the gaming industry he decided to stay. In a career spanning over 40 years he worked at every major resort in Las Vegas, mentoring countless people in the industry along the way, and eventually rising to become General Manager of the Primm properties.
Gathering with family and friends brought him the most joy in life. He will be remembered for his lifelong love of music, and his ever-present sense of humor.
Joe was predeceased by his beloved daughter Bluesette, and by all of his siblings - marking the end of a storied era. He is survived by his wife Vivian, children Margaret Blake and Troy Ash, and grandson John (Cheryl) Blake. Joe will also be missed by his former spouse Judith Ash, her daughters Julie Denny, Jodie (John) Martin, and Jackie (Sean) Stout, and by Ed Kadlecek (Bluesette). He also leaves behind a large family of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and innumerable lifelong friends.
Memorial arrangements will be made in his hometown of Olean, New York. Joe will be dearly missed by everyone who knew him...
"He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." Revelation 21:4
