Johnny Beal Leonard and Georgia Mae Leonard were blessed with six children: a son, Jacob Metters and five daughters; Johnnie Mary Brooks, Joyce McDaniels, Evelyn Parish, Patricia Lacy, and Estilina Bodden. Johnnie Mary Leonard was born on September 2, 1939 in Waco, Texas. Johnnie Beal Leonard, Georgia Mae Leonard, Jacob Metters, Joyce McDaniels, and Estilina Bodden all precede her in death.
Johnnie Mary Leonard moved to San Francisco, California when she was 12 years-old and graduated from Balboa High School. After graduation, she attended John Adam’s School of Nursing in San Francisco, California where she was blessed with her eldest daughter, April Deann Price.
After graduating from nursing school as a licensed practical nurse, she met and married Wesley Brooks Jr. and they were blessed with two children: Felicia Marie Brooks and Jan Wesley Brooks Jr. The family resided in Daly City, California. She worked as an LPN at Mt. Zion hospital in San Francisco for ten years.
Johnnie accepted a position at Sunrise Hospital Medical Center and the family relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada. She worked at Sunrise Hospital for ten years.
After working in a hospital setting for twenty years, she decided to take classes to be trained as a physical therapist assistant and worked at Jean Hanna Clark, a state rehabilitation center, for twenty years.
As she reached retirement age, Johnnie began working as an LPN at the Clark County Detention Center where they often referred to her as “Grandma Johnnie.”
Johnnie was a kind-hearted individual who showed compassion and love for everyone. She was the modern-day “Mother Theresa” because of her ability to put the needs of the many over her own needs and desires.
Johnnie was an avid gardener. She had several varieties of roses in her garden which she treasured! She also had a vegetable garden where she grew mustard and collard greens.
One thing everyone knew about “Grandma Johnnie,” was she loved her dogs. At one point, she had as many as eight dogs. Her favorite was Ginger, that was her baby.
Through many trials and tribulations, Johnnie never lost her faith in the Lord. Her favorite saying was, “The Good Lord Will Make a Way.”
Johnnie leaves to mourn her passing: her children, April, Felicia, and Jan; all her grand-children and great grand-children; her sisters, Evelyn Parish and Patricia Lacy; her brother-in-law, James Brooks and wife, Wanda Brooks; and devoted friends, Josephine Springer, Robbie Freeman, and Vernon Roberson, and a host of relatives and friends.
