

Colonel John A. “Jack” Herberg, 95, a long-time resident of Prescott, Arizona passed away Tuesday, January 9, 2018 in Las Vegas, NV. He was born April 1922 in Eau Claire, WI to Milton and Violetta Herberg. He found his soul mate and partner for life at the age of 25 when he married Vangeline Alameda in St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Suisun, CA on November 30, 1947.
Jack was a career Air Force officer and pilot in World War II; flying over 69 supply missions in the China-Burma-India Hump theater and the Berlin Airlift. His military travels expanded the world and he proudly served with distinction for 30 years, with 9,300 flight hours; retiring from military service as the Base Commander of Homestead AFB, FL in 1972. A veteran of WWII, he earned several medals, including the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, and WWII Valor Medal.
Jack was preceded in death by his beloved wife Vangie, parents, and his revered Uncle Earl.
Jack was a wonderful, loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He is survived by his children Darby, James and Jeanne; grandchildren Clayton, Lisa and Cassie; great-grandchild Laila; siblings George, Ruth, Bill and Donna; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
He loved fishing and hunting, playing the piano, classical music, especially Beethoven. He was a lifelong student of history, mathematics, and enjoyed tinkering with cars. He gave from his heart, was unflagging in his generosity, and was always there when we needed him. He will be deeply missed.
Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Monday, January 22, 2018 at the Palm Mortuary – Eastern, 7600 S Eastern Ave, Las Vegas, NV. Memorial service and Final Commendation will be at 10:40 a.m., Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Buchanan Blvd, Boulder City, NV.
