John Leslie Harris entered eternal life on April 12, 2025 at the age of 89, in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was born on August 18, 1935 in Memphis, Tennessee and later his family moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
His early education was in schools in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, later finishing college with a BS in Mechanical Engineering.
John is survived by his wife Sandra (Sandy) Harris, a son, Laurence (Mary) Harris of Chula Vista, California, one grandson, Dominic Harris of Los Angeles and granddaughters Lauryn and Londyn Harris of Chula Vista, California.
John was one of six siblings: (Three brothers) Zebedee "Zeb", Henry "Hank", Marion "Preacher", and two sisters Miriam "Bean", Carolyn "Baby" and cousin Sylvia "Sibby". He is survived by two sisters: Miriam Blathers and Carolyn (Donald) Hansbrough, who reside in Milwaukee. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
John served in the U.S. Army from 1957-1959 at Fort Carson, Colorado with an honorable discharge. He was an avid reader, had a great sense of humor, played in several bowling leagues, enjoyed golf, liked to fish, watch sports on TV, and of course, cruising / traveling.
John and Sandra started cruising in 1982 with family members and later began organizing cruises for friends/groups from 1985 - 1994. They were planned every other year until the groups became over 140 people. There were many years of fun, laughter, excitement and adventure with each cruise.
After moving to Vegas, John couldn't stay still and was hired and drove for RTC for a short time; later working part-time at Sears in the Shoe Department while Sandy was still teaching students full-time at Clark County School District (CCSD).
John touched many people in his life and will leave a wealth of memories for all his family and friends to cherish. Although John's health was beginning to decline, we will never forget his humor and big personality.
Many, many thanks to John and Sandy's long time close friends of 40 plus years, Harold "Jeff" and Rita Jefferson, who were with Sandy until the end.
The family would like to thank of all you who shared encouraging words, texts, cards, flowers, or phone calls to offer condolences.
Also, special thanks to the staff at the Centennial Hills Hospital ICU who cared for him lovingly until the end.
A memorial service for John will be held Monday, April 28, 2025 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Palm Mortuary - Northwest, 6701 North Jones Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89131, followed by a reception from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
