John was born April 11, 1934 on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, in the plantation town of Mana, to his father Leoncio Florendo and mother Theodorica Pablo Florendo. He grew up with 6 siblings; 4 brothers and 2 sisters. After attending high school in Waimea, John entered the US Army. He retired with 22 years of service in the Army Signal Corps and attaining the rank of Seargent First Class. He served two tours in Vietnam, was stationed in Germany, and served in several locations in the US. After retiring from the Army in 1975, John entered civil service with the US Army Communications-Electronics Command (CECOM) at Fort Monmouth, retiring after more than 23 years as an Electronics Equipment Specialist and over 45 years of dedicated service to the Army and this great country. He and his wife moved to Henderson, NV in 2005, to retire and enjoy the desert heat.
John was known as “Pops”, being 15 minutes early, took notes and filed everything, and was always prepared ahead of time. He enjoyed fishing, barbecuing, bowling, horse racing, watching sports and playing poker and pinochle with friends. John stayed active with computers, Netflix and on his phone with the Station Casino Racing App, until his passing.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Solficio and his sisters Severino and Trinidad. He is survived by his wife Liwayway Gonzales Florendo, his son John G. Florendo and his wife Debbie, grandchildren Sydney and Athena, and greatgrandchildren Evianna and Jonn Wency; also by his daughter Jane F. Martin, her husband Gary, grandchildren Jessica, Jeremy, and Joshua; siblings Casamero, Jaime, and Alphonso; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for John is planned for Friday, July 29, 2022, from Noon to 2 pm PST. The memorial service will be at the Palm Eastern Funeral Home at 7600 S Eastern Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89123.
