John Edward Dachel was born in Neenah, Wisconsin on August 29, 1943. He died peacefully in Las Vegas on March 12, 2023, at the age of 79, with his wife and daughter present. He was preceded in death by his parents, John (Jack) Dachel and Donna Watts Dachel of Neenah.
John has three siblings: Judy Bush, Bill Dachel and Penny Dachel Bunnell. The eldest sister Judy has a son, Scott Butterfield (nephew) with two daughters: Savannah and Kelly (grandnieces). Savannah's daughters are Dakota and Austen. Kelly's sons are Jayden and Jackson.
Bill Dachel of Neenah is married to Joanne Dachel. They have three children: Zack Dachel, Samantha Willing and Jake Dachel. Zack (nephew) and wife Jenny have a son Erik (grandnephew) and daughter Mikayla (grandniece). Samantha (niece) and Alex Willing have two sons (grandnephews), Dexter and Calvin.Penny Dachel Bunnell-John's youngest sister is married to Dewey Bunnell of the Band "America". They have a daughter Destry Bunnell (niece).
John's daughter (Ann's too, just not by birth) Michele Dachel Johnson married to Kurt Johnson have four children. John's grandchildren are- Anthony Rishwain, Matthew Rishwain, Rachel Johnson and Jack Johnson.
Ann's brother, Michael John Richardson preceded John in death in 2022. Her older brother, Charles David Richardson is married to Robin and they have three children: Erik, Heather and Daniel. They are from Paxton, Massachusetts.
John's father John (Jack) Dachel was the Postmaster of Neenah for over 20 years. He was appointed by President John F. Kennedy.
John entered the Navy on the "buddy system" with friends at age 17. By testing, he excelled at mathematics. The Navy tagged him for submarine school, he declined and became schooled as an electrician. He used that training after the Navy working for "Hartley Controls".
He traveled the Midwest to repair complex Foundry operating systems.
John was introduced to Ann Brien by George and Peggy Connor on May 7, 1983. The anniversary date Ann and John routinely celebrated, the date they met. They married in Las Vegas on June 23, 1984. For almost two years, 1987/1988 they moved to Neenah. John being recruited from Vegas to work for his friend, John Bergstrom. Ann worked as an ED RN, where Joanne (sister-in-law) was an ICU RN--Theda Clark Hospital.
John had an artistic eye, a talent for cartooning and cactus gardening. His rock (geologic) collections are with his grandson Jack. There was a story behind every rock he collected-the where, how and why. His other passion was paperweight collecting- showing his love of color and artistry from all over the world. On a trip to Italy his favorite place was Murano. He loved to cruise, sitting on the fantail spinning tales. He didn't have a shy bone in his body. In 2011, they met lifelong friends, Ron and Linda Ingalls and Harry and Nancy Brown. They were seated together (Table 53) on a two-week cruise to the Panama Canal. They are their treasured friends now and known by Johnny, as they call him, their "Cruise Buddies".
John was articulate and gregarious. You never wondered what he was thinking. Ann speaks of him as a wonderful loving husband, father and brother. The life of the party, usually at Sandy Hammargren's house. He made the gravy and carved the turkey. A master storyteller, lover of nature and animals. He has 4 sweet cats. A favorite childhood spot was Minong, Wisconsin. He described his childhood like the TV show" Leave it to Beaver". His mother he said, "was the best Mom ever'. He had immense pride in Michele and her family. The Dachels came frequently to Vegas to see their Uncle John. All the family are ardent travelers and adventurers He will be forever missed by his wife Ann, and family.
Palm Mortuary is handling the arrangements. A brief Navy sendoff is planned for April 25th at 1:20pm at the Boulder City VA Cemetary. It is open to anyone who would like to attend.
