John William Bateman, 86, of Las Vegas, passed away peacefully on the morning of December 16, 2023. He was born on June 25, 1937, in Tillamook, Oregon to Irvin Bateman and Margaret Ewan. He was the oldest of five children.
His life unfolded as a testament to resilience and love, marked by significant milestones. Graduating high school in 1955, he later pursued education at Western Oregon University on a football scholarship - which would unfortunately end in a sudden knee injury. A devoted patriot, John dedicated three years of his life to the U.S. Marine Corps, reaching the esteemed rank of Sergeant (E-4) while serving as a skilled helicopter mechanic.
On September 24, 1983, John sealed a lifelong commitment with the love of his life, JoAnn Sullivan - saw each other through ups and downs, enjoyed traveling to their favorite places together, and created a deep, shared devotion for one another.
John's legacy extends through the lives of his Bateman children and Sullivan stepchildren. He was not just a father, but a guiding force - imparting values of hard work, humility, and kindness.
For most of his life, John predominantly worked as a carpenter in both Oregon and Nevada. His hobbies included photographing and fishing in Alaska with his son Ben, reading mystery novels, and watching football. More importantly, his favorite pastime was supporting his wife and children. This could be anything from building wooden toys for his grandchildren, putting together clocks for his family members, or just sharing funny stories at the dinner table.
In the tapestry of his life, John wove threads of love, compassion, and unwavering dedication. His role as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather showcased the depth of his character, leaving a lasting impression on all who were fortunate enough to know him.
As we bid farewell, we remember John for his enduring work ethic, humility, honesty, and great sense of humor. John was preceded in death by his parents, sister Linda, brother Jerry, and stepson William. He is survived by his wife - JoAnn; sisters: Barbara (Darrell) and Nancy; Bateman children: Brenda, Ben (Kerry), Autumn (Russ); Sullivan stepchildren: Karen (David), Stephen (Jackie), Mark, and Sean (Diana); grandchildren: Tony (Brooke), Eric, Joshua, Ryan (Ephi), Alexandra (Jared), Summer, Shane, William, Courtney, Michael, Britani, Devyn, Lexi, Blaine, Caden, and Brian, as well as several great-grandchildren.
