Following high school graduation as valedictorian, Jerry graduated from the University of Chicago with MD and PhD in Biochemistry. He fulfilled his medical internship and residency at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis-St Paul. He served his military obligation conducting medical research at the National Institutes of Health as a Lieutenant Commander in the Public Health Service. He was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Stanford University. He was board certified in Infectious Diseases and was cofounder and practicing physician in the first infectious disease medical practice in Las Vegas, Infectious Disease Consultants.
Jerry served as Associate Professor at both University of Rochester and University of Nevada. In his academic posts, he made significant contributions to medical science, pioneering treatment for respiratory syncytial virus in children. He mentored and taught medical students and residents at the University of Nevada, Valley Hospital and Touro University. He received numerous awards as an outstanding physician and teacher. Dr Hruska was known to his colleagues, residents, nurses and patients as a compassionate, caring physician.
With a passion for learning, Jerry developed interests in music, languages, history and the chemistry of cooking & wine. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying waterskiing, snow skiing, snowboarding and hiking.
Survivors include his wife Donna; two children, Christina of Mercer Island, WA and Jerome Karl of Las Vegas; four grandchildren, Jett, Avery, Josh and Anna; one brother James of Hickory Hills IL. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial service is scheduled for Thursday 4/14 at 2pm at Palm Mortuary (1600 S Jones Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89146), with reception to follow memorial. Interment will take place at a later date at Woodlawn Cemetery in Chicago IL.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed the Elaine Wynn Palliative Care Team at Nathan Adelson Hospice, University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine or Touro University Nevada.
