Jeanne Alice Sheldon, 82 "Jaycee" to all that knew her, passed away unexpectedly in the early morning hours of October 12, 2023 in her Las Vegas home. Wife, mother, sister, Jesus called and she answered.
Jaycee was born December 14, 1940 to Alice & Clifford Cavanaugh in Long Beach, Ca. She has two older brothers, Wayne & Warren and accepted the Lord into her heart when she was nine years old. They moved to Orange, Ca and her parents divorced. Her mom married Jim Spear and added Marlene and Carol to the family. Jaycee graduated Orange High School when it was still surrounded by Orange groves. She loved the arts & crafts classes where she made many ceramic pieces she still has today. She loved to sew, crochet & make jewelry! She started Tea Room modeling & waitressing and was able to purchase her dream car a 1957 Chevy! She painted "Jaycee's G G", (Jaycee's Go Getter) on the back fender- driver's side. It describes how she lived life, she was a Go-Getter! One night in 1960, Jaycee was at the Pike in Long Beach in The Lido Ballroom. A handsome sailor caught her eye and became the love of her life. From that moment forward Art & Jaycee started their journey together. They eloped to Las Vegas in July of 1961 and shared over 62 years of love & adventures. She even made her own wedding dress. In May of 1963 they welcomed daughter Kelly into their lives. Very fitting for it was right around Mother's Day. In August of 1965 Robin joined the family. In December of 1967 their son Richard, or as we all know him Rick, added the finishing touch to the family of five. The family enjoyed camping, picnics, dancing at The Polka Palace, sports & riding motorcycles in the desert...yes, she did that too! As the family got older Jaycee & Art started the family in bowling. Jaycee left waitressing to become Assistant, then Director of Junior Leagues for Regal Lanes in Orange, Ca. The largest bowling center in the United States at that time! Jaycee then changed careers to become the Head of Commissary for Allergan Pharmaceutical Corporation in Costa Mesa, Ca. Along with running the kitchen crew, ordering and preparing the weekly meals, she taught herself how to make amazing fruit & vegetable landscape table decorations that she used in the Commissary and would later create for parties. One time at the end of the week there were a bunch of glazed donuts leftover. She decided to make Bread Pudding out of them for the staff. It was a big hit and they requested she have it on the menu every week! After a few years, she changed careers again to become the Head of the File Room for Nationwide Insurance. She received their S.O.A.R Award for going above and beyond her normal job requirements. Jaycee and Art attended Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa under the guidance of Pastor Chuck Smith and then found their perfect fit at The Vineyard Christian Fellowship in Anaheim, Ca with Pastor John Wimber. They learned all about the Gifts of the Spirit and would start their own Kinship / Bible Study groups at their house. After Art retired in 1999, they moved to Las Vegas, NV and into the 2-story house Jaycee had always dreamed of having with a big sweeping staircase. She has an extensive coffee cup & book collection she could show off, along with her crafts she made. She set up a hobby/craft room, floor to ceiling...literally, floor to ceiling where she could work on all her jewelry, watches, beading, painting and sewing she taught herself to do. She made jewelry from paperclips, pasta, safety pins & pictures. She loved to crochet. She made scarves, blankets, pot holders, towel holders, beer can hats, doilies, afghans, bed spreads to name a few. In her spare time, she crocheted & donated over 100 blankets for a children's ministry/charity! Her collection of beads is extensive! She would sit for hours beading picture that she would draw or buy as a cross stitch pattern. She would bead the picture instead of cross-stitching it. She went to John Fish Jewelry School and graduated a professional jeweler. Jaycee loved creating something from nothing. Egg carton Christmas trees, floral arrangements, Candy Kid jars, to beautiful fans made out of plastic forks, lace and paper plates. She has been saving soda can tabs to design a "curtain" out of them. She would buy jewelry to take apart to create her own design or integrate into another piece. If she didn't have jewelry to match an outfit, she went into the hobby room and made some! She had just finished organizing thousands of pictures she had saved over her lifetime that she liked. They were cut out, organized, attached to pages and put into 3-ring binders...30 of them, alphabetically. She was organized! Must have been those years as Head of File room.
Jaycee loved the Lord and found Meadows Fellowship in Las Vegas with Pastors Ron Flores Sr. & Ronnie Jr. as the family's new church they attended for 23 years. She was proud of her kids... loved being with her family, teaching and chatting with friends. Her quick wit, infectious smile and a twinkle in her sparkling blue eyes sometimes gave way to tears because she was laughing too hard at something funny. Always ready to share her insights on the Bible and her personal experiences with God. She was well versed on natural remedies, her book collection on that topic is quite extensive. More recently, conversations on the terrible world events and how it lines up with the end times & the Book of Revelations. Always happy to help, pray and give support to anyone in need. A true woman of God who was ready for the Rapture to "take us out of here". Jaycee always dressed her best for church. "You give God your Best" she would say. I would like to say Thank you Lord for choosing your very Best, our beloved Jaycee, and giving her to us. At Church, with her family/friends and throughout her life, Jaycee didn't just sparkle, she shined.
Jaycee is survived by Art, her loving husband for over 62 years; daughter Kelly, and husband Ken Bunnell , grand dogs Scooter, Syssie & Junior; daughter Robin, grand dogs Piper & Bijou, grand cat Shiloh; son Rick, and wife Christina, grand dogs Rylee, Keegan & Greta; her brother Wayne Cavanaugh; brother Warren and wife Charlotte Cavanaugh; sisters Marlene Sheetz & Carol Dayton; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
If attending her Celebration of Life service, please wear colorful clothes. We are Celebrating her Life, her new place in Heaven, not mourning her death. Although we miss her terribly here, we will see her again in Paradise with our Lord!
