away peacefully in Las Vegas, Nevada on April 27, 2023,
at the age of 88. Born on April 3, 1935, in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania to Martha Leigh Smithe and John Albert
Stuhmer, Jim's life was filled with love, devotion, and a
passion for making a difference in his community.
Jim's journey in life was one marked by significant
milestones and unwavering dedication to his family,
faith, and service. On September 24th, 1966, he entered
into a lifelong commitment of love and companionship
with his beloved wife, Ellen Frances Hefner. Together,
they built a life filled with cherished memories and
shared experiences.
As a father, Jim embraced his role with unwavering
dedication and grace. He took an active role in their
spiritual and academic lives as well as involving himself
in their extracurricular activities. He coached soccer for
five years, instilling in his children a love for sports and
the importance of teamwork. Jim leaves behind his
children, Susan Stuhmer and Tom Morris, John and
Meghan Stuhmer, and Heidi and Scott Pattison. Jim's
legacy continues through his grandchildren: Kevin
Morris, Karli Stuhmer, Nicole Morris, Elijah Pattison,
Vanessa Morris, Sarah Pattison, and his
great-grandchild, Mason Morris. He is also survived by
several nieces and nephews.
Jim's educational journey took him from St. Bernard's
Catholic School in White Plains, New York, to St. John's
Military School in Delafield, Wisconsin. St. John’s
Military School was founded by his mother's family.
Following high school, Jim attended Penn State and
Knox College, where he earned his bachelor's degree in
History and Political Science. During his youth, he also
had the opportunity to study abroad as an exchange
student in Denmark further enriching his understanding
of the world.
After college, Jim served his country in the Army
Intelligence for six years, exemplifying his unwavering
commitment to duty and service. Following his military
service, he honed his skills in the private sector by
working in a bank in Los Angeles. In 1964, Jim relocated
to Las Vegas and joined forces with his brother, Jack
Stuhmer, in the contracting business. Together, they
built houses in the Las Vegas community.
Jim was actively involved in the Home Builders
Association, dedicating his time and expertise to
bettering the industry. He served on the Board of
Directors for many years and held the positions of Vice
President and President at different times. In recognition
of his contributions to the building community, he was
nominated as Home Builder of the Year in the 1970s.
Jim’s dedication extended beyond his professional
endeavors. He was deeply engaged in church and
community work, embodying his faith through his
actions. At Grace Presbyterian Church, he served as a
Deacon and an Elder, teaching bible classes and
actively participating in various committees and small
groups. He co-founded Amazing Grace Ministries, an
organization committed to helping the working poor and
homeless in the Las Vegas community. Jim served as
both President and Vice President and remained on the
board of directors for many years, positively impacting
the lives of countless individuals.
Jim's character was a testament to his admirable
qualities. A lifelong learner with a thirst for knowledge,
he was an avid reader and a source of wisdom for those
around him. His deep-rooted faith was evident in both
his words and actions. As a devoted and loving
husband, father, and friend, Jim brought joy and comfort
to those who had the privilege of knowing him. He held
his church and its people close to his heart, always
extending a helping hand to those in need.
A Funeral and Celebration of Life service will be held at
11:00 am on Saturday, July 15th, at Grace Presbyterian
Church. The family kindly requests that donations be
made to Amazing Grace Ministries in care of Grace
Presbyterian Church. Any gifts or contributions, both
small and large, would be deeply appreciated, allowing
Jim's philanthropic work to continue enriching the lives
of the less fortunate.
As we bid farewell to Jim, let us remember his enduring
love, unwavering faith, and dedication to improving the
lives of others. Jim's presence will be dearly missed, but
his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts and minds
of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
