She was born in Cairo, West Virginia in 1920. She was raised
on a small family farm. In her 96 years she saw many changes
in her life and to the world. She had 4 sisters and 1 Brother.
She was preceded in death by her Mother Flossie, Her Sister Jo,
Her Father Bruce, Her Brother Marion and her Sister Madeline.
She attended St. Josephs Catholic Nursing School in West Virginia,
And became a registered nurse. As part of our Greatest Generation
she served in the Army Nurses Corps in World War II on a hospital ship.
She met, and later Married her Husband, Joseph W Sands in the Army.
She was preceded in death by Joseph and their son John W. Sands. She is
Survived by her Sons Joseph and Christopher. She was Preceded in death
by her Grand Son Joshua and is survived by Joshua’s Twin sister Crystal
as well as Grand Son Christopher and Granddaughter Gloria and
Great-Granddaughter Hannah.
Helena often said “The problem with living this long is all of your friends
Die, and you can’t find any new friends your own age”.
She was a humble, caring and also strong, independent woman who was
admired by all who knew and loved her.
Memorial services will be at Palm Mortuary, 1600 S. Jones on
Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 3:00 P.M.
